Whichi s a better way to travel by bus or the south shore train? Are there any other options?

The only other option would be to rent a car. When are you going? In the winter the South Shore can be very unpredictable due to the cold weather.

Yes you can park long term at both Hammond or Portage. You do so at your own risk though. It pretty much depends on the weather as far as the train being reliable. In bad weather there can be delays for hours, not days though.
