Unfortunately, for those who might pop into the Flagroom at The Indianapolis Motor Speedway, you%26#39;ll miss the older looking gentleman with the cowboy hat. That was Lloyd Ruby, who passed away yesterday at age 81. Some say he was the greatest driver to race in The 500 that didn%26#39;t win. I%26#39;m sure The Speedway will remember him in May somehow. I%26#39;m also pretty sure that DaveInIndy will post a comment on this.
Indy 500 Great!
So sorry to hear this. Lloyd had come up on another blog - Fox Sports Nascar/Racing blog - and many there had good stories to relay about Lloyd.
Always remember sitting in the stands at many races, listening to the PA announcer interview Ruby after his engine had failed after leading a sizable number of laps, and hearing the now familiar Texas drawl ';Whaallll, it%26#39;s juss wun uh tham thangs, yu know?';
He%26#39;s right up there with Dan Gurney in my eyes with regard to great drivers who%26#39;ve never won the race.
Indy 500 Great!
RIP Lloyd...you%26#39;re another VIP in racing history!!
