IU Graduation Weekend May 8-9, 2009

We are trying to find a hotel for the weekend of May 8th and 9th for IU%26#39;s 2009 graduation. I realize that we are just plain out of luck for anything in the immediate area - even waiting lists require full advance payment over $300 per night for rooms. Can anyone recommend a place within 20-30 minutes of Bloomington where we might find a decent place to stay? THANK YOU!

IU Graduation Weekend May 8-9, 2009

The bad news is that everyone else wanting to go to the graduation is in the same boat, so you may find the close options also full/expensive.

Here%26#39;s a few towns that are roughly a half-hour drive of Bloomington (give or take a little):

Martinsville - a little north;

Nashville - a little east - it%26#39;s a rustic/artist touristy area - in addition to a few hotels/motels, you might be able to find a tourist home (like a B%26amp;B only without the breakfast) as an option;

Bedford - a little south;

Bloomfield - a little southwest;

Spencer - a little northwest.

There are some other towns within this 1/2 hour circle which might have a motel/hotel, but these are the main ones. Also, there are likely a few ';standalone'; hotels/motels scattered among the various highways (but would expect most of these to be listed under either Bloomington or one of the above towns).

Good luck with these - if you don%26#39;t have any luck with them you%26#39;ll have to widen your search.

When you expand your ';time circle'; to a hour or so you get to add Indianapolis, Columbus and a fair number of other towns. Not sure you%26#39;ll be able to find something in the 1/2 hour range, but can%26#39;t imagine you wouldn%26#39;t be able to find something in the 1 hour range.

Hope this is helpful,

IU Graduation Weekend May 8-9, 2009

You might want to google for hotels around Franklin, Indiana (on I-65, it%26#39;s south of Indianapolis and wouldn%26#39;t be too bad a drive for you.

Franklin (and lots of others) certainly would be an option. I will however, point out that it is farther than the 20-30 minute circle you mentioned and, because much of the (shortest) drive to Bloomington is 2 lane state highway and not anything close to direct, the driving time is longer than you might imagine based on ';as the crow flies distance.';

Driving from Franklin I%26#39;d allocate at least an hour, probably longer because there will be traffic. In fact from Franklin, it might as quick to take the longer route and drive north (on I-65) to Indianapolis, go west (I-465) and then drop down on SR 37 as this is 4 lane all the way (a good portion restricted access interstate).

If you%26#39;re going to consider Franklin (which isn%26#39;t necessarily a bad idea), I think there are a bunch of other towns you should consider as well (many of which are less/similar driving times than/to Franklin). A few that come to mind are Columbus, (southern) Indianapolis, Greenwood, Mooresville, Edinburgh and Seymour.

Lastly, it%26#39;s a probably a longer drive than you want, but you might look at French Lick/West Baden Springs. If you%26#39;re wanting something special (read fancy and depending on what you%26#39;re used to real expensive). Each town (really 1 twin town, they%26#39;re that close) has a very nicely renovated resort hotel (major resorts ~75 to 100+ years ago, before the depression and cheaper travel (car/air)).

One of them (West Baden Springs Hotel, built circa 1900) has a dome which was the largest enclosed free span space in the US until the building of the Houston Astrodome in the 1960s. Bottom line if you%26#39;re inclined to spend an extra day or two, want something memorable (beyond the graduation) and money isn%26#39;t a major concern, I%26#39;d suggest you consider these as an option.

My guess on driving time from the French Lick area would be ~1 hour to ~1.5 hours.

Again, hope this is helpful and if you want more information on any of these options go ahead and ask.

Just wondering what you ended up doing?

Posting your experience, decisions, etc will be helpful to others in the future in general as well as allowing those of us who are local to have better information.

Hope you reply . . . .

We decided to stay in Indy for the graduation weekend. I had Hilton points and was able to reserve a room for 2 nights at no cost, and the 1+ hour drive isn%26#39;t that different from some of the ';closer'; towns. Thanks for all the advice!

Thanks for the reply. Certainly can%26#39;t argue with your logic - think you made an excellent decision.

I%26#39;ll just add that you should allocate plenty of time for the drive from Indy to Bloomington as there will be very likely be heavier than normal traffic that day (doing the same thing you are) and there can be delays (particularly as you approach Bloomington and in town).

we are planning to go to seymour in june hope so i do believe that is the town mellencamp is from what would bew the closest motels to stay at what townsa thank you connie

Connie,

First it would probably have been a good idea to have made your question a new posting. If I hadn%26#39;t been set up to have e-mail alerts on responses it might have been awhile before I noticed it and it%26#39;s really not related to the original topic.

Yes, Seymour is the town where John grew up, although he lives in (outside) Bloomington now.

While not certain, I imagine Seymour is large enough that you will find a selection of hotels/motels available, particulary since it is on an interstate highway.

If you don%26#39;t find anything available or to your liking in Seymour, Columbus is probably the next place to try. It%26#39;s ~15minutes/mile north on the interstate amd I know it%26#39;s got a cluster or two of hotels/motels located at it%26#39;s exit(s).

Hope this is helpful,

Chris

Connie,

I suggest you post on the Seymour Indiana forum (just checked there is one). It has even less traffic than the Bloomington forum, so I%26#39;m not sure you%26#39;ll get a response there and/or it may take awhile. Thus, I%26#39;d tell you to post ASAP.

Also, looked at what TA had for Seymour hotels and they list 10 of them. Didn%26#39;t look at the reviews or anything, but did notice the (2?) forum postings for Seymour were related to hotels.

I%26#39;d check out the TA reviews and then see what%26#39;s available based on your timeframe/budget.

Good luck,

hlo

Pizza place near Carmel discount for 6-8 larges??

Does anyone know where I can purchase some pizzas around the Carmel area, and that they might give me a discount if I need to order like 6-8 large pizzas???

We are coming this weekend for a youth conference, and I need to find a place near Carmel to purchase these pizzas. Thanks!

Pizza place near Carmel discount for 6-8 larges??

Headed out today.....so I guess I will just check around when I get there. Thanks anyways!

Pizza place near Carmel discount for 6-8 larges??

Just in case you check back in ...

Pizza Hut has several locations and typically provides some sort of discount for large purchases.

Other than that, ... the only place I%26#39;d recommend - and it would likely be lost on hyped-up kids - is Bazbeaux%26#39;s Pizza on Main Street at the Monon Trail. Bazbeaux%26#39;s is a great place for families, but I don%26#39;t think they offer discounts for multiple purchases. The location on the Monon Trail makes it a particularly nice place to eat on a nice day.

going to Tiki Bob's....what hotel should we stay at?

What are some close/nice hotels near Tiki Bob%26#39;s? The Homewood Suites is sold out. Any suggestions? We are going to party and don%26#39;t want to drive.

going to Tiki Bob's....what hotel should we stay at?

The Hampton Inn downtown Indy is pretty close. Conrad (much more upscale) is close as well. Hilton garden Inn is very nice, but farther away. Marriott, Hyatt, %26amp; Omni all have places as well, but not as close either.

Indy.com will help you in your search.

going to Tiki Bob's....what hotel should we stay at?

Crowne Plaza is close. Second the Hampton Inn it gets good reviews on TA. The Omni is also close by. All the hotels are within a six block area. So pick what fits your style best.

Another nice bonus about staying downtown is that all taxi rides are just $5.00. As long as it is in the downtown area. That is a very nice deal.

Grizzly Adventures at the Circle S Ranch

We stopped at this attraction on our way to Indianapolis. My husband saw a sign on interstate 74 that said ';Grizzly Adventure';. It immediately caught his interest, but I had hestitations. Needless to say, we took the 5 minute detour off the interstate to this ranch. What a wonderful surprise! This is actually a small petting zoo-like setting with many different types of exotic and farm animals, including black bears, buffalo, lemurs, and goats. The ranch is very well maintained. There are trainers and staff located throughout the farm that will teach you about the animals and assist you in feeding the animals. They also offer a tractor ride, in which you tour more of the animals that are located farther from the buildings. My two year old son was reaching nap time, so we did not have time. I would recommend this visit to anyone with small children. We hope to visit again this summer. They do offer a small snack shop, gift shop, and restrooms.

First time to Indy

Hello everyone,

My wife and I are contemplating a little trip to Indy the second weekend of August (13-16 to be exact). We would like to go to the Colts/Vikings pre-season game whenever that officially gets scheduled and I am wondering when tickets will go on sale? I know up here in Minnesota we can get pre-season tickets for very cheap... except for me (I%26#39;m a season ticket holder and get forced to pay full price but anyways). Is that the case for the Colts? My wife is a big Colts fan and I am a huge Vikings fan so I thought it would be a fun experience for the both of us... even though there is nothing more boring than pre-season football!

We also are hoping to take a little day trip to Cincinnati to check out the Reds play some ball.

Finally... what exactly is there to do in Indy? Where should we stay? We would like to do things as cheap as possible but still have a good time. Any help would be greatly apprecaited. Thanks!

First time to Indy

LV: Can%26#39;t help you much on the Colts pre-season details, but there are some good hotel options downtown and really quite a bit to do. Indy is stinking hot in mid-August, as I%26#39;m sure you are aware. Among higher cost hotels downtown that are close to the football stadium are the Conrad, Marriott, Westin, Hyatt, Hilton, Omni, Canterbury, Embassy Suites, Sheraton, and Crowne Plaza. Next tier are Courtyard, Ramada, Holiday Inn Express, Hampton Inn, Days Inn, Homewood Suites, Residence Inn, Hilton Garden Inn. I can personally recommend the Westin, Conrad, and Marriott as good places. There%26#39;s also the Columbia Club, which is a grand old building directly on Monument Circle that is part private club and part hotel. If you are willing to stay out in the suburbs and drive downtown, there are more options like Drury Inn and Suites and others at probably much better prices.

As far as stuff to do, there%26#39;s shopping at the Circle Centre Mall, tons of restaurants, shops and clubs on Mass Ave, the state museum, the NCAA museum, the war memorial, Eiteljorg musueum of american indian art, Indiana Historical Society museum, theater, minor league baseball, WNBA basketball, the Indy Zoo (which I don%26#39;t recommend). That%26#39;s just downtown. The Indiana State Fair will also be happening during that time. The Indpls museum of art and Indy Motor Speedway Hall of Fame museum are a short car drive. If you have young children -- which it sounds like you don%26#39;t -- the Children%26#39; Museum is the best in the nation. Broad Ripple is the big bar-hopping area.

Anyway, that%26#39;s a few ideas. There%26#39;s more than a enough to do to fill a few days.

If you are planning to go to Cincy, it is less than 2 hours from Indy and in my opinion is one of the most fantastic cities in America, with millions of things to do.

First time to Indy

I believe the Colts are sold out and like you the season ticket holders have to pay full price, HOWEVER, there are usually plenty of tickets on the street from either season ticket holders who don%26#39;t want to go and are trying to recoup some money or from scalpers. Don%26#39;t be surprised if oyu don%26#39;t find a good seat for $25 or less OR check out a ticket broker at places like STUBHUB to have tix in hand before coming to Indy. The new Lucas Oil Stadium s spectacular. Cincy is an easy two hour or less drive and The Great American Ballpark is nice also. If you fall in love with Indy and don%26#39;t want to make the drive to Cincy, the Indianapolis Indians (AAA affiliate of the Pit Pirates) might be in town. Victory Field has been voted the best minor league ballpark for about the last 4 years. Prices for those games are very reasonable, but it%26#39;s notquite the same as the majors, especially since the Reds WILL be in contention for the NL Central (sorrow Cub fans). As far as things in Indy, what do you like to do, what type of food do you enjoy, etc? etc??

Guess I should have said that staying downtown wold be the best, more convenient, but a little more expensive. Staying out farther from downtown will save money and you can find nice places to stay within 15 min or less to dwontown. Parking is usually no problem in Indy.

Lots of good hotels downtown to choose from. Check early for reservations. Indainapolis has lots of big conventions in the summer months. So the hotels could fill up quickly. I recommend seeing a baseball game at Victory Field. Reasonable prices and great place to watch a game. Cincy is also a great city downtown area. Parking is much more difficult in Cincy than in Indy. Reds tickets are not cheap anymore. Stub hub would be the way to go for Colts tickets. I would not trust buying tickets off the street.

Buying tickets on the street outside the stadium is fine, most selling them during pre season are season ticket holders that have extras. My husband used to sell his tickets all the time, sometimes he%26#39;d even give them away for pre season games.

Hampton Inn and Hilton Garden Inn would be two good places to try for rooms that won%26#39;t break the bank.

This talk of football is making me homesick for Indianapolis and I was just there a couple of weeks ago!

Hey GABBY, hate to make you feel bad about football talk, BUT, May in Indy is coming up fast, 500!!!

I just read in the newspaper that the annual Gen Con meeting with 28,000 gamers and science fiction buffs will be in Indy Aug 13-16. The group is essentially taking over the convention center and surrounding hotel meeting space downtown, which of course we LOVE! But I%26#39;m guessing that getting housing especially downtown during that period will be a little dicey . . . at least if you%26#39;re not making arrangements through the Gen Con association. So I would suggest getting your hotel pretty soon or you may run into sold out or inflated pricing situations.

Easter lunch or brunch options

We%26#39;re visiting our son at Purdue on Sunday and I%26#39;ve been trying to locate a good restaurant that might be open on Easter. I%26#39;ve tried McGraw%26#39;s, Bistro 501, Maize, La Scala - none of them will be open. We did find an option at Toscana%26#39;s in the Holiday Inn, but the buffet sounds pretty uninspired and the reviews haven%26#39;t been good so I think we%26#39;ll pass.

Does any one have any suggestions for good, non-chain restaurants that might be open on Easter? Ethnic food would be OK. Thanks! BB

  • Nice place to stay in Seymour?

Has anyone stayed at a nice, clean, yet reasonable motel in Seymour? we will coming up that way in June for a family reunion, and will be needing a place to stay... Thank you

Nice place to stay in Seymour?

Suggest you check out the TA hotel listings/reviews - there aren%26#39;t that many too choose from so I think a few minutes of looking at them would give you a clue as to the better/worse ones.

Also, if you just don%26#39;t see anything in Seymour and/or nothing is available, you might check out Columbus; it%26#39;s only about 15 miles/minutes up the road.

Beyond that I%26#39;m sorry to say I can%26#39;t really help you.

    Indianapolis for Easter

We are going to Indy over Easter weekend and have 2 children with us (9 and 12). We would love to go to a FABULOUS Easter Brunch - even the kids are foodies and love to try new cuisine. Does anyone have any suggestions that are really worth checking out ??

    Indianapolis for Easter

The ONLY places currently advertising for Easter buffet are: Indpls Propylaeum and Hyatt Regency Hotel. My dilemma is that Easter happens to be my daughter%26#39;s 7th BIRTHDAY and she wants to have a nice - fancy? - Easter brunch with family. But the Hyatt is $30 for adults and out of the price range of many of our relatives. So.. anybody else out there have any tips?

    Indianapolis for Easter

The Keystone Grill has a very nice brunch every Sunday. I%26#39;m sure that Easter will be extra nice. It will be somewhat pricey.

On the North side, Loon Lake Lodge has an Easter brunch, their number is 3178459011, they are at 82nd and 69. Price is 18.95 adult, 7.95 child (I%26#39;m not sure what the age cut off is between adult and child.) Sahm%26#39;s Restaurant is also doing an Easter brunch, they are located at 116th St. and Allisonville Rd. and their number is 3178451577. I%26#39;m not sure of their pricing. Both are taking reservations.

The hotel at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has a great Easter Brunch, its only $20.00 for adults. It at the Brickyard Crossing Inn. 317-241-2500

I saw that the Conrad hotel will have Easter brunch...$48.00 per adult. That should be really upscale. El Torito near the fashion mall has a wonderful brunch. Some Mexican food, carving stations, omelet station, %26amp; lots of other stuff. Seems like it was $30.00 per adult last Mother%26#39;s Day.

We attended the Conrad Hotel Easter Brunch this year in Indianapolis, and were deeply disappointed.

Just a few of our complaints:

-very dirty heavily stained table cloth from earlier sittings

    - bland, unimaginative foods

    - stale/dry/mushy food that was prepared yesterday probably.

    - And to boot, after charging $50 per adult (which we knew would be the price), they added a $20 ';service charge'; to our bill. For just two people!! Service was good, and I would probably have left a 15% tip or so, but adding a mandatory $20 charge (for a buffet)?? This mandatory charge was not mentioned anywhere by the way, not in advertising, not at the entrance, not by the table, nowhere. It just appeared on our check.

Having had Easter brunches at hotels all over the country, this was by FAR the worst, and grossly overpriced with a large unadvertised mandatory service charge to boot. I%26#39;m happy to pay $50-60 for an Easter brunch, or even more, but not for what the Conrad offered. Deeply disappointing, really put a damper on our Easter Day.

    Wow Brightviolet,

That%26#39;s terrible. I would expect much much more for the price. And a service charge seems out of line for only two people at a buffet. I%26#39;ll keep this in mind for Mother%26#39;s Day %26amp; steer clear.

Looking for lake house rental that takes pets and has boats

We%26#39;re moving to Ft. Wayne, IN and will need a getaway come mid-July. We%26#39;re looking for some place close by that is right on the lake, will take our dog, has boats on the premises and doesn%26#39;t cost my firstborn. Fairly rustic is fine.

Looking for lake house rental that takes pets and has boats

Someone from the Ft Wayne area could probably be more a lot more helpful, but I can recommend a really nice lake area about 30 minutes northwest of Ft Wayne, near Syracuse, IN. There is group of lakes in the area, the largest and most popular being Lake Wawasee, and there are vacation rentals available. Probably will cost both your first and second born, but it%26#39;s a possbility to check into. It%26#39;s really busy around there in the summer, so might not be right if you%26#39;re looking to get away from the world. Don%26#39;t know all the details on rentals but here%26#39;s a link to get you started

    vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/…lake-wawasee

If you go that way, be sure to stop into a little restaurant called the Sleepy Owl. You can read my breathless review about its tenderloins here on TA.

There are dozens of little lakes north of Columbia City and a cluster of them almost due north of Ft Wayne, but I really don%26#39;t know anything about them. Hope this helps a little bit.

    Hotel needed

Is there a hotel between Evansville In and Santa Claus In. My family will be coming down there the first week of June and want to see the Zoo %26amp; Children%26#39;s Musuem in Evansville but also want to go to Holiday World.

It would be nice to have a indoor pool too.

    Hotel needed

Finding a good hotel in between those two locations may be difficult. There are a lot of places around Evansville and then as you head East towards Santa Claus your options become less. I can%26#39;t even think of any hotels on 64 between the two locations truthfully. Around Santa Claus there is the St. Nick Lodge and then in Dale right off the interstate you have a Motel 6 and Baymount Inn, but then your options close to Evansville would have to be in or just outside of Evansville. I know there are some little cabins around a lake not far from Santa Claus (but they are fairly new and I%26#39;m sorry but I don%26#39;t know the name of them) or there is always the option for a cabin or camping at Lake Rudolph right next to Holiday World or a cabin at Lincoln Park.

    These sites might help some

    http://www.legendaryplaces.org

    http://www.in.gov/visitindiana

    www.in.gov/visitindiana/travel/brochures.aspx

    Hotel needed

indygirl is right. There%26#39;s not much between the two. And in the summer, you%26#39;re better off staying closer to Evansville, anyway, because all of the campgrounds/lodges/etc. near Holiday World stay pretty booked and have much higher prices that time of year.

I live between the two (closer to Evansville) and Holiday World is really only about a 45 min. drive from the far east side of Evansville. Believe me, it%26#39;s worth it to make the drive.

    The only exception I would make is that there is a park in Boonville, Scales Lake Park, that is a locally-run park with really nice cabins available for rent; the staff is nice and the cabins come with a fully-equipped kitchen, two rooms and a deck on the lakefront for about $65-80/night, depending on weekend or weekday. It%26#39;s a very good deal, except it doesn%26#39;t include linens/towels or soaps, etc. If that wouldn%26#39;t be an issue, I would check there first. Even though it%26#39;s only about 8 miles from where I live, we%26#39;ve rented their cabins for our kids%26#39; ';camp-out'; birthday parties or to just ';get away.';

If you want a hotel, though, there are a ton of options along I-164 in Evansville that will give you decent access to all of the places you%26#39;re planning to visit, as well as numerous nearby restaurants. Look for a hotel near I-164 and IN-62 or IN-66.

The children%26#39;s museum is right off I-164 as you head to downtown Evansville; there%26#39;s also an awesome playground to the left as you enter downtown called Kids Kingdom. Both my 5-year-old and 11-year-old say it%26#39;s their favorite in the area, so you should definitely check it out - it%26#39;s a great place for a picnic, too. It%26#39;s just south of the Evansville Museum of Arts History and Science. That museum also can be fun for kids (depending on ages) and is based on a donation admission, so it could be another activity, (if you need one).

The best route to the zoo is probably just to take IN-66 and then head north on St. Joeseph Ave., so that, too could be fairly easily accessed from the area I mentioned.

Sorry this is so long, but I hope it helps!

Not sure what to make of the Holiday World review . . . we go there every year on Labor Day weekend and while always crowded (all amusement parks have long lines), I have never experienced rude employees. In fact, quite the opposite.

His experience obviously was unusual. They%26#39;ve won first place as ';Friendliest Park'; by the Golden Ticket Awards (';The Oscars of the Amusement Industry';) for almost a decade!

    Family trip

My husband and I are taking our two boys (5 and 10) to the Children%26#39;s Museum and zoo the first weekend of May. We live in southern Indiana, and so, have visited Indy several times before. We%26#39;re going this time specifically for the LEGO and Star Wars the Clone Wars exhibits at the museum - we LOVE the museum. The zoo is a family favorite, too, especially the newer marine exhibits and dolphins, and is easy to hit the same day we drive home. The problem is we%26#39;re heading up on Friday and don%26#39;t really have anything to do that evening. We should be getting there in the late afternoon/early evening. I think there are several museum-type places we might find interesting, but most close by the time we would be getting there. I%26#39;ve found several sites for family fun centers, but we do that kind of stuff here (mini golf, bowling, go carts, etc.). I was hoping for a more unique experience or something we can%26#39;t do at home. Any suggestions?! I saw on some earlier posts suggestions about taking a gondola or renting a surrey along the canal. Would that be something you can do in the evening? Is it affordable? Any other suggestions would be appreciated!!! Thanks!

    Family trip

Here is a link to White River State Park by the canal. It has links to all the attractions. The surrey rentals appear to be available until ';dusk.'; You can call them to make sure.

Here%26#39;s a link to the calendar for Speedway events in May. The balloon glow is Friday May 1st.

There looks like there%26#39;s also a game at Victory Field that night.

    …milb.com/schedule/index.jsp…

    Have a great time!

    Family trip

Lily318%26#39;s baseball suggestion is a really good one. Even kids who don%26#39;t like baseball or sports have a pretty good time. This is especially good if you are staying downtown since the ballpark (Victory Field) is downtown.

    And there%26#39;s always Chuck E Cheese, of course . . .

Thank you both for your suggestions! I%26#39;m so glad you mentioned the balloon glow - this is the first I%26#39;d heard of it - and I think that would definitely be something we would enjoy. We might also check into the Indians game, although I think after a 3-1/2 hour car ride, we might want to get out and stretch a bit. Thanks for all of the helpful links. I had visited that canal Web site, but silly me didn%26#39;t realize you could click on the logos to access additional information; that%26#39;s all I needed to know, though. I appreciate you guys taking the time to respond! I love this Web site, because I know I%26#39;m getting ';real'; people with ';real'; answers!!! Now, if you could only make the next two weeks go a little faster... :)

A note of interest. I believe the 500 Festival mini marathon is Sat May 2. This will probabaly delay your trip to the zoo until about 9-10 a.m. There will be close to 30,000 runners participating. Downtown friday should be acive with a lot of the runners staying in the hotels there. Just a walk along the canal would be nice depending on the weather. It might be fun to get up and watch the start or the finish of the marathon. I think it starts about 8 and it only takes the front runners a little over an hour to finish. To see the wheel chair participants finish is inspiring. (they usually start a little earlier and finish in about an hour also.

  • Saturday night with a teenage boy

    Hi all,

I will be in Indy this weekend with my son for some soccer games. We are staying at the Courtyard Capital, downtown. What would be some cool things for him to see or do? Are there any good shopping malls downtown or nearby? You know teenagers......

    Any major sporting events??

    Thanks!!

Saturday night with a teenage boy

Hi SueZ. For shopping, there’s the Circle Centre Mall downtown; big place, lots of stores, movie theater. You could blow most of an evening in the mall and just walking around downtown. Walk over to Monument Circle. You can also walk along the canal which is pretty nice. The war memorial area is also a nice walk. Tons of restaurants. Jillian’s might be fun for a teenager – restaurant with a bunch of games. Hard Rock Cafe. A lot of the interesting stuff like museums, zoo, etc, probably won’t be open at night. Might be boring for a teenager anyway.

For sports, the Indianapolis Indians baseball team plays not far from your hotel, but sadly will be on the road Saturday night. They play at home on Friday night. It’s a great time and would be a top recommendation, but alas, it is not to be for Saturday. The Pacers are done for the season. The Colts are tanning on faraway beaches, I imagine.

Massachusetts Avenue has some interesting restaurants. Bazbeaux Pizza is a local favorite, as is Yats, a Creole place.

Here are a few useful links. There are a number of very knowledgeable Indy-ites who monitor this forum who could probably give you some solid ideas.

Honk, thanks for your response. These are some good ideas. I know he would just love the mall....Maybe I%26#39;ll have him bring a friend and they can hang out....

I will check out all your links. Thanks again!

HONK about hit it all. When are the soccer games and where are they played at?

    Corporate meeting facility (outdoorsy)

We are planning a one day meeting with 10 executives. We are trying to find a facility near Indianapolis. We would like to be out of the city (outdoors, woods, golf course, you get the idea). I looked into Eagle Creek Park and they have 2 homes, but would be $500 for just one day and that is over budget. What our main needs are would be a large conference room with a few smaller rooms for breakout sessions. We would need to have access (either through the venu or on our own for breakfast and lunch catering) Any ideas?

    Corporate meeting facility (outdoorsy)

If you are willing to go as far south as Brown County, you might try the Seasons Inn in Nashville, Indiana. They recently reopened %26amp; have a nice, rustic conference center.

    Corporate meeting facility (outdoorsy)

You might try the Indianapolis Museum of Art or the Gardens at the indianapolis Zoo (can%26#39;t remember the exact name there)although it is downtown. Another thought might be out at Fort Harrison. They have a beautiful facility overlooking the golf course.

One idea might be in Fort Benjamin Harrison on the northeast side of the Indy. The Kendall Inn is right next to the entrance of Fort Harrison State Park. They have lodging, a restaurant, and some meeting facilities. I cannot personally vouch for it, but it looks pretty nice from the outside anyway. Might be pricey but maybe they%26#39;ll comp the meeting space if you do food and lodging. The Fort golf course next door is one of the nicer courses in the city and also has a restaurant and some meeting facilities at the clubhouse. The Fort clubhouse also has lodging but it looks as if it doesn%26#39;t have enough to accommodate your group. If they stay at the Kendall Inn, the walk over to the golf clubhouse with golf equipment might be too far. Might have to drive them, which may seem a little goofy because it%26#39;s very close. Links below.

    http://www.thefortgolfcourse.com/

Another possibility might be Prairie View Golf Course (nicest in the metro area IMHO) and they have good food and catering. I know they have banquet facilities but not sure if they can accommodate a smaller business meeting or have breakout rooms. They are really pricey too but very nice place. Link below.

    http://www.prairieviewgc.com/index.php

    Good luck!

Indyob -- Didn%26#39;t see your recommendation Ft Harrison before I posted. Sorry!

All of the recommendations are very good. The grounds at the Museum of Art are very pretty, with short trails down to the water. Nice.

Right downtown has hotels right on the canal, with easy access to White River Park (plus all the amenities of downtown Indy if you go out the front door ...).

Conner Prairie used to have meeting facilities on their property too - a living museum, showing life in a frontier town in the 1800%26#39;s. I would think they still have the meeting facilities/cabins. It%26#39;s near enough to the interstate system to be easily reachable, but remote enough to forget you%26#39;re near the city. About 15 minutes north of I-465 on Allisonville Road.

If golf is a big thing - you can%26#39;t go wrong with the Fort though.

    Lodging

We plan to travel to Madison in late May for our Anniversary and for my husband%26#39;s Birthday. The last time we were in Madison, we stayed at the Comfort Inn. We really want to stay downtown this time. This way, we can walk to the shops, river, pubs, etc. Any suggestions? We were thinking about the Riverboat Inn?

    Lodging

I have not stayed at the Riverboat, but my Mom did last summer %26amp; really liked it. Each room is a little different. They stayed on the river side of the inn %26amp; had a great view of the Ohio River. It%26#39;s close to the Key West Shrimp House which is in an old button factory. I find their food to be average, but their menus have lots of historical information about Madison %26amp; the staff is great. Based on what I know, I highly recommend it.

    Lodging

Honeymoon: This is not downtown in Madison, but you might consider the lodge at Clifty Falls State Park, which is right next to Madison. If you have never been to the park, it is one of my favorites in the state. I cannot personally vouch for the hotel there, but it might be a great alternative to the same-old same-old Comfort Inn/Days Inn/Cockroach Inn stuff. Here%26#39;s a link below. Pricing looks pretty reasonable. I have seen the view and it overlooks the river and Madison from the heights above Madison.

    in.gov/dnr/parklake/inns/clifty/lodging.html

    Hi Honeymoon,

I have stayed at the Cclifty Falls inn several times and it is very nice--good prices for what you get.

The very best rooms are the ones with the terrace overlooking the river. Breakfast buffet is extensive .

    Hotel question

Is there a law in Indiana against queen size beds in motels? I am trying to find a motel in the Indianapolis arear (preferably close to the north bypass) with queen beds (for my husband, myself and adult daughter) and a free breakfast. All the Choice hotels and HIEX have doubles or kings.

    Hotel question

do you mean hotels with 2 queen beds in a room, rather than 2 doubles or just 1 king?

    Hotel question

I%26#39;m guessing you are shooting to get two beds and a room with two double beds isn%26#39;t what you need? Probably be hard to find a double queen-bedded room . . . don%26#39;t remember ever seeing one myself, now that I think of it. If a double/double (as they call it in the biz) won%26#39;t work, a possible solution might to find a low-cost suite such as the Drury Inn at I69 and I465 on the northside that has a hideaway bed in the parlor, and a king or double/double in the sleeping room. There%26#39;s also a Hampton Inn and Suites in Fishers, a Homewood Suite in Castleton, and Springhill Suites in Fishers, all on the north side near the bypass. Not sure they have pullouts but it%26#39;s a possibility to check into. You might also be able to request a rollaway bed to be brought to the room. Probably cost extra though.

As far as a law, it%26#39;s probably just coincidence but I wouldn%26#39;t be a bit surpised if some law didn%26#39;t pass back in 1876 forbidding queen beds. :)

Isn%26#39;t there still an Embassy Suites just south on Michigan Road at the 1-465 north and Hwy 421/Michigan road exit? They have two rooms, a king bed in one and the sofa is a hide a bed, that would work perfectly for you.

It%26#39;s still there. Used to do a lot of meetings there. Was a real nice place.

The Drury Inn and Suites has rooms/suites with two queen beds.

Makssaan is right. I checked the site for the Drury Inn Northeast Indy mentioned in my post above and they do indeed have both rooms and suites with two queen beds. Rates from $89-129. It%26#39;s a new hotel. I have had great experiences with Drury Inns.

    Nice work there, Makssaan.

    Apartments In/Near Terre Haute?

My brother is leaving this summer for graduate school in Terre Haute. He%26#39;d like to live in an apartment off-campus but has heard generally bad things about the area. He will have a car, so driving to campus would be okay. Are there any other areas/neighborhoods that he should check out for reasonably priced, SAFE housing within 15 minutes or so of Terre Haute?

    Apartments In/Near Terre Haute?

I wish I knew more about the area to help you. I tried a Google search %26amp; didn%26#39;t come up with much. Maybe he should try networking through the school, Sorry %26amp; good luck.

    SB2

    Apartments In/Near Terre Haute?

Thanks for poking around. He is doing some networking with a few kids who graduated from his current university last year and are grad students out there now. Unfortunately, he hasn%26#39;t heard many positive things about the area. But I appreciate that you tried!

    Temporary Housing

I hope someone can give me leads. I am a IU student interning May-August in Indy. I am looking for a furnished apt that perhaps I could sub-lease or possibly an extended hotel stay. I cannot go any higher than $650 a month. Most places I have called want more than that. I am hoping someone on TA can recommend places that are in a good neighborhood and reasonably priced. I will be working downtown. Thank you!

    Temporary Housing

Linn51: Unfortunately, I am not up to date on the local rental market. Short-term furnished is kind of a tough one. There are furnished apartments on the far northside called Pickwick Farms, which are short-term rentals. I stayed there several years ago for a few months and it was fine. It%26#39;s kind of a haul to downtown, however, and I doubt it will meet your price limitations. I think it was $35/day back then. Their web site is not terribly helpful but here it is anyway. You might call and ask if they have any mercy for a starving student.

    http://www.zidans.com/Default.aspx?tabid=241

May I inquire as to where you are interning? Is the company or IU giving you any help with this?

    Temporary Housing

By the way, if you are targeting a particular place and want to know more about the immediate area, go ahead and post that information (probably shouldn%26#39;t put the exact address though if it is a private rental) and you can probably get some insight from some of us yocals.

You might contact/go to some Indianapolis colleges to see if there are students who are trying to sublease their apartments for the summer. Back in the olden days there were bulletin boards with that information. Now it%26#39;s probably available online somewhere.

    Good luck!

Also, if you go to www.move.com, type in the city, maximum rent, and ';furnished'; in key words some apartments will show up.

';Good'; for a college student is sometimes different from ';good'; for an older adult. Lively/loud or peaceful/boring if you know what I mean.

    Good luck!

    This website gives neighborhood information.

  • Nice restaurant for graduation dinner from Anderson Univ

Help! my daughter is graduating May 9 from Anderson University in Anderson. Since we-her parents, live in WI, we have no idea where to take her for a nice celebration afterwards. As a college student, her budget has not allowed her to go to nicer restaurants either so I need some advice.

We need to find a nicer ($25 - $30 per person) restaurant within 45 minutes of Anderson. Preferably south to southwest since some of us will have to make the 6 hour trek home that night. I%26#39;d like something in the $25-$30 range. Please send me your ideas soon. Thanks! Chris

Nice restaurant for graduation dinner from Anderson Univ

Cheerhcs -- Don%26#39;t have an immediate answer for you but I know the area between Anderson and Indy very well. I%26#39;ll get back to you with some suggestions.

    Honk

Nice restaurant for graduation dinner from Anderson Univ

Unless a place has emerged over the past 12 months or so, I%26#39;m sorry to say there%26#39;s not much in Anderson beyond some nice chain-type places.

In nearby Perkinsville, Bonge%26#39;s has been through several owners without losing their overall quality of food (at least not for long). I don%26#39;t know if they%26#39;re open during the time period you%26#39;d want though - they do have a web site. They are about 20 minutes west of Anderson.

If you%26#39;re willing to drive down to the north edge of Indy (a pretty short drive, WELL within the 45 minutes you%26#39;ve mentioned), you can hit a large number of very good restaurants. Chief among them - in terms of pretty fancy places to eat - Peterson%26#39;s. In my opinion, they%26#39;re the best locally owned restaurant in the city. They are open for dinner only, and are pretty expensive (~$35 per person and up). And there are many others within a short drive of Peterson%26#39;s.

Thank you both for your attention to this. I can easily drive to the north end of Indy if need be. I do need to find something at the lower range of upscale. Any other suggestions will be great as well. I will look into Peterson%26#39;s tonight also Thanks again!

    Cheerhcs:

As he always does, DaveinIndy made the best possible suggestion. Peterson%26#39;s is both upscale, very easy to find, and not far from Anderson. It%26#39;s at the intersection of Interstate 69 and 96th street in Indy. It%26#39;s probably 20-25 minutes from Anderson, probably 35 minutes from Anderson University campus, depending how fast you drive.

As Dave said, there%26#39;s really not much in Anderson anymore as far as upscale dining. I had heard of a nice newer restaurant in Pendleton, which is near Anderson and not far from Indy. I was checking into it but couldn%26#39;t get any info about it though.

If Peterson%26#39;s doesn%26#39;t fit the bill, I would recommend looking at restaurants in Carmel, Noblesville, and Fishers. These are all suburbs north of Indy and have some level of upscale dining. Other specific suggestions might be Glass Chimney in Carmel and Bellavita on Geist Resevoir in Fishers (nice atmosphere, okay food, harder to get to). In the Castleton area of Indy, just south of Fishers, there%26#39;s a place called Loon Lake Lodge. You can do a Google search for ';restaurants, castleton, IN'; and get some results to consider.

    Of course, there is the chain stuff like Bonefish Grill, Bravo%26#39;s, Maggianos, Cheescake Factory, etc etc. North Indy and the %26#39;burbs have just about every upscale chain. Trip Advisor can be helpful if you search for ';restaurants, %26lt;city name%26gt;,IN';

Wish I could give you more ideas. Feel free to ask questions.

Thanks so much! With the graduation rapidly approaching, I appreicate all these tips. I really narrows down my search. once again, my friends at TripAdvisor, have come through for me. You all are the best!

I would recommend Stone Creek Dining Company. They are located in the new Hamilton Town Center at I-69 %26amp; Exit 10 (very close to Anderson). Their website is:http://www.stonecreekdining.com/noblesville

I know the proprietor Mike Cunningham personally and he always does everything top notch. Not only is the food outstanding but the atmosphere is great as well. Once you%26#39;re done with dinner you could catch a movie at the 16 screen IMAX Theater, shop at a myriad of stores, etc. The mall%26#39;s website is: www.simon.com/mall/default.aspx?ID=1214

    Good luck and congratulations!

Cheerhcs -- Just to support indystoprealtor%26#39;s suggestion . . . the location of this restaurant is nearly perfect for your needs as it is getting close to halfway between Indy and Anderson. It%26#39;s closer to Indy than to Anderson and wouldn%26#39;t add much more driving time on to the poor souls who will be hitting the road that night back to WI (I assume they will backtrack to Indy to catch I65?)

All the above posts are great! I can%26#39;t seem to get early enough to put my two cents in!! GOOD FOR YOU ALL!! Where in Milwaukee CHEER? I lived in West Allis (119th and national) back in the early 70%26#39;s

    Just following your example, Indyob!

    Indyob,

We actually live quite close to your previous home. We live in new Berlin right on the New Berlin, Brookfield border. Since most people have no idea where New Berlin is, Milwaukee is good for a general location :)

Thands to all who are helping me with ideas. 3 weeks to go %26amp; I am on the hunt for one of the restaurants that you have all suggested.

I am also on the Paris forum looking for advice on her graduation gift- a trip to Paris so anyone with ideas on that one, look me up there %26amp; put your suggestions down there too!

    Restaurant/hotel advice for qualifying weekend

    Hi everyone!

My family is coming down for qualifying weekend for the 500 (May 8-10).

Not to get too personal, but this is a really special

weekend for my family and I. Two years ago my mom passed

away unexpectedly and to celebrate her life we are all

going to her favorite place/weekend. Mother%26#39;s Day

weekend at the Brickyard. We can%26#39;t wait!

We have rooms at the Wingate Inn on Rockville road reserved.

Is it a decent place to stay??

Anyway, are there some decent family restaurants that

aren%26#39;t too far away from the speedway/downtown?

We are pumped to go! It%26#39;s been several years since we

last went to the Brickyard and this means a lot to my family and I.

    Thanks in advance!

    -Dan

    Restaurant/hotel advice for qualifying weekend

There are a number of Indy 500 fans who regularly contribute here who will be only too happy to help out the family of a fellow fan.

There is a restaurant in Mooresville (about 20 to 25 minutes from the Rockville Road exit) that serves Cajun food, and is one of our favorites, called Zydeco%26#39;s.

That%26#39;s about all I know about restaurants on the west side (and it%26#39;s southwest). In my opinion, you have to go to the suburban towns (Brownsburg, Avon, etc.) to find good restaurants. Downtown Indy is only about 20 minutes from the track (plus whatever delays caused by traffic leaving the track - but probably not substantial as crowds at quals aren%26#39;t too bad). Many of the really good restaurants are there. Among the independently owned that would be good for families: Iaria%26#39;s (moderately priced Italian), Milano Inn (also moderately priced Italian), and Harry and Izzy%26#39;s (fairly expensive American cuisine - ~25 to 40 per person). Among the chains: Buca di Beppo (moderately priced Italian, served family style), Weber Grill (moderately priced barbecue), Fogo de Chao (moderately expensive to expensive brazilian steakhouse - GREAT for families with all but very small children if it fits your budget, about $35 to $45 per person), and many more.

There are others who are much more knowledgable about the west side who will chime in I%26#39;m sure.

    Restaurant/hotel advice for qualifying weekend

aaaahhhhh, one more race (Kansas), then the cars and drivers are Back Home Again in Indianapolis. The Wingate at Rockville Road is nice (fairly new) and I think it has a small indoor pool. There is a lot of road construction on I 465 on the westside especially on the Rockville Rd and 10th street exits but that shouldn%26#39;t bother you too much. My guess is you are less than 5 miles fron the track there and I would take the back roads instead of the I state Ican help you there)If you%26#39;re ready for a good breakfast on Pole Day go to Charlie Brown%26#39;s on Main Street in Speedway. The American Legion on Georgetown Rd (right across from the track) usually has an all you can eat pancake breakfast. If you%26#39;re looking for somehting a little lighter go to Long%26#39;s Bakery about a mile and a half east of the track on 16th street for the BEST doughnuts in Indy. Of course lunch should be at the track. Either bringing in your own (13 in coolers are allowed) or getting a ';track steak'; aka a hotdog at the concession stand. The Speedway prices actualy aren%26#39;t too bad. Of course you could always go to Mug N Bun just east of Lynhurst on 10th street for THE BEST chli dogs and O rings (one order of o rings feed 2 or 3) After a quick rest back at your room you might retuen to Speedway for dinner at Dawson%26#39;s on Main (steak) or out to Union Jack%26#39;s for great pizza and also a look at one of the biggest private race helmet collection around. Artist Ron Burton owns them (www.ronburtonart.com) and also has many original painting hanging in ';UJ%26#39;s';. A drive downtown might be fun also. You might even run into the Pole winning team celebrating at possibly Morton%26#39;s, Shula%26#39;s or another fins steak house. Downtown is fun. many things to do and see. Parking free on te streets or will run about #3.00 to park aboout 5 hours

Dan: I won%26#39;t repeat the sage advice of DavefromIndy and Indyob, but will say that Wingate Inns are among my favorite low-cost/high-value chains. They generally pile on the amenities and are really clean. Don%26#39;t know much about that particular one, but I have always been very satisfied with Wingate.

This is a perfect start! Thanks!!

    Dan

What's up with the hotel prices?

I get the impression that I am being taken advantage of as a tourist. I understand that there is a relatively limited tourism season in the mid-west but great googly moogly, hotel rates nearly double in the summer months. And as if that weren%26#39;t bad enough, nearly double again on weekends in summer. But wait there%26#39;s more, the weekend is three nights long in Indiana.

Is this summer weekend price gouging limited to lodging or can the same be expected of restaurants, service stations and the like?

What's up with the hotel prices?

Indy does many conventions %26amp; you may find yourself competing with these for rooms. Also, race weekends will be difficult as well. Better rates can be found outside of the downtown area. As far as I know, restaurant rates do not change, but will be more crowded during conventions %26amp; races. Have you tried the Hilton Garden Inn? I checked their rates for a weekend in June %26amp; they were similar to winter rates. Others recommend the Columbia Club, but I don%26#39;t have personal experience with it as a hotel, only has a club. Good luck.

What's up with the hotel prices?

It probably is really a supply-demand thing. There are several major events during the summer months (such as Brickyard 400) that can drive prices up, and as shutterbug said, the conventions and trade shows are pretty steady. It%26#39;s feast or famine. Winter is slow and then it%26#39;s really busy during the summer months. There%26#39;s no gouging on prices that I%26#39;ve seen, though I will say that one restuarant -- Champions in the Marriott -- significantly raised its prices due to a major downtown event. I confronted the server about it (this was a couple of years ago) and he admitted that it was due to a big event in town. I had eaten there only days before and then the prices had gone up ridiculously. It%26#39;s the only time I%26#39;ve ever seen it happen.

Again, what days are you looking at in the summer? As my cohorts have mentioned, there are some key dates in the summer to avoid (Indy 500 and Brickyard 400 weekends in particular.) And it is true...many conventions plus nice weather equal higher prices.

I%26#39;m sure restaurants (and I know hotels) do raise their prices during the big race weekends. Those are money-maker weekends for the city. If you can find a city or town that doesn%26#39;t do this with similar large events, I%26#39;d be shocked.

I just checked kayak.com for July 4 weekend, and found several hotels downtown for around $100/nt. That%26#39;s not bad for downtown...actually, it%26#39;s pretty good. Also, if you are willing to be a little more flexible, you can try bidding on Priceline. I%26#39;ve gotten my sister a room downtown for $50/nt in the summer.

Let us know how we can help. As far as prices go, Indy is a reasonable city, even in the summer!

Thanks, I appreciate the input and suggestions. I%26#39;ve been looking further and further out of town but so far have found very little to my liking at a reasonable price.

I am aware of several available hotels that charge less than $100 per night regardless of the season. I have also read some particularly unsettling reviews of those same hotels right here at tripadvisor.com.

Price is not my biggest concern although it is not my smallest either. I do however expect a particular level of quality and service from a room in the $150-$200 per night range that seems far more the norm in the Indianapolis area.

Perhaps I am attempting to reserve a room too far in advance and not getting a rate that may be available closer to the date of my trip?

I think I may have found the place.

    Quality Inn

    150 Lovers Lane

    Franklin, IN

There%26#39;s a rate increase for the season and weekend nights but much more reasonably so than I%26#39;ve been seeing elsewhere. There are a number of glowing reviews here at tripadvisor that date back a few years. This wouldn%26#39;t be my first choice based on proximity to my destination but not my last either.

If anyone has any comments or recommendations with respect to this particular hotel, I thank you for posting them please.

When I submitted the above post, the name of the hotel was automatically hyperlinked to different hotel.

the url of the tripadvisor page for the hotel I am considering is:

    tripadvisor.com/鈥EVIEWS

Can%26#39;t speak for this hotel personally, but Franklin is quite a way out of the city. Some of us indigenous peoples could probably give you better insight about what%26#39;s going on with pricing and the best area to stay if you can post the dates you%26#39;ll be here and where you%26#39;ll be spending most of your time while in town.

I agree with HonkHonk. Franklin is about a half hour drive from downtown. Nothing to see or do at that intersection of the interstate except to check out the truck stops and cornfields. It seems it would be a bit of a waste to come to Indianapolis and stay in Franklin.

You must be looking at a weekend of either the races or Gencon (a large convention downtown.) Typical weekends in the summer are not 3 day weekends.

If you can be flexible on the weekend you are here, there are a ton of great deals on Kayak.com for summer weekends.

July 10-12: Westin for $109, Canterbury for $132, Columbia Club for $148, Conrad for $169. All very nice hotels in the center of downtown. There are small inns and b%26amp;bs on the Old Northside (Villa Inn, Looking Glass, Stonesoup...) Breakfast at the b%26amp;bs are included, and the Villa Inn was just named a 4 star inn by AAA. The rooms at the 3 inns I just mention are between $100-$225.

And, you can try Priceline this early. I was a bit shocked when I got a downtown Seattle hotel for $79 in June on a Friday night. The hotel website was $229. Be date flexible, and do a little bargain hunting... you will find something downtown.

The trouble is the dates are not flexible. We%26#39;re coming out for the brickyard 400 on the 7/26 and campingworld truck race on 7/24 at o%26#39;reilly raceway. So, we expect to spend Thursday thru Sunday nights.

I agree that half hour drive is less than desirable but I suspect raceday traffic is going to make any drive a long drive. It would be nice however, to be a little closer to town for sightseeing on the other days we%26#39;re there.

I had originally been looking in Brownsberg for it%26#39;s proximity to both tracks but prices there have skyrocketed in recent weeks and rooms are becoming harder and harder to come by.

*Note: My earlier comment regarding three day weekends was in reference to several hotels charging ';weekend'; rate for Friday, Saturday %26amp; Sunday. Increasing rates for two nights on the weekend I can understand but for three I feel like these hotels are at best taking advantage of tourists and at worst illegally price gouging.

That answers a lot. The Brickyard 400 attendance last year was nearly 300,000. The 400 and 500 races pretty much wipe out the hotels in the entire metro area and beyond. It%26#39;s like trying to get a hotel room in Times Square on New Year%26#39;s Eve. My best advice is to make your arrangements pretty quick before there%26#39;s nothing to be had at any price.

Lodging question for this Friday (4/24)

    Hi Everyone,

We are leaving West MI after work Friday, with an ultimate destination of Gatlinburg TN. We hope to stop for a short time in French Lick Indiana to see the resort, but have no intentions of spending the night. So if we leave Michigan approximately 4PM that puts us in Indianapolis around 8-9PM. Coming via I69. Could you all give me a few suggestion for a nights lodging for under $100? I think we could make southern Indy or maybe even down 37 heading to French Lick. All we need is a safe place to sleep. We are a family of 3 adults. Thanks I really appreciate the recommendations.

Lodging question for this Friday (4/24)

From I 69 I would consider driving south on 465 to maybe the beech grove exit. A couple of hotels there. Or you might consider tryinmg to make it to Bloomington which is down State Road 37 on the southside about an hour drive. Bloomington would be an easy drive to French Lick which would give you plenty of time to look around then head towrds TN. Plenty of hotels in Blomington right off 37

Lodging question for this Friday (4/24)

I like the idea of going to Bloomington as well. Fairfield Inn there has rooms with 2 beds for 119.00 + taxes. Hampton Inn has nothing for the 24th %26amp; Hilton Garden Inn is 200.+. There could be a special event that%26#39;s jacking up the rates. Seems too early for graduation. If I have any better ideas, I%26#39;ll post later.

If you get tired and decide not to go on to Bloomington that night or the south side of Indy, there are several hotels on I69 just as you are getting into Indy. There is a new Drury Inn at I69 and 82nd street exit, just before you get to I465. Very safe part of the city (there are not very many unsafe parts, especially on the outskirts of the city). Generally, their prices range right around $100 and I have always had great luck with Drury. I%26#39;m guessing a room with two beds on a Friday night will probably be around $130 if you book through the hotel, though. It will probably take you the better part of 30 minutes to clear Indy from there; I69 ends there at that point and becomes state road 37, but meanders through the city. It%26#39;s best to take 465 around the city if for no other reason than to avoid getting lost. You can pick up 37 again on the south side off 465.

If you bed down in Indy, I recommend you stay either on the north or south sides. I would not recommend hotels along 465 on the east side.

If you take Indyob%26#39;s advice and want to stop at the Beech Grove exit off I-465( exit 52), there is a brand new Holiday Inn Express and they have just recently remodeled the old Holiday Inn (LaQuinta now). There is also a Red Roof Inn, Motel 6, and Super 8.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the help!

Could be Little 500 weekend if I%26#39;m not mistaken. Also could try the 31 south exit or East street just past Beech Grove the Greenwood area. Some nice hotels around I-465 area. Bloomington Little 500 weekend is THE biggest party weekend of the school year. Right before everyone graduates or leaves for the summer.

Oh my goodness. Is there anyway to verify if this is a ';special'; weekend in Bloomington? I have no idea if we can make it that far, but it certainly is possible. Thanks for the heads-up.

Just searched the net and found that Little 500 is this weekend in Bloomington.

Thanks Saltydog67. I should have done that myself last night! Well I suppose we will definately avoid that town! Either stop before or drive on thru a bit further, depending on traffic etc. Thanks again.

  • Highway 41 from Chicago Ilinois to Evansville Indiana

Is there anything of interest to see between Chicago Ilinois and Evansville Indian? Any neat restaurants the kids (13 to 5) might enjoy? Would you recommend taking Highwy 63 from Carbondale to Terre Haute rather than Highway 41? If so, is there anything of interest, etc?

    Thanks

Highway 41 from Chicago Ilinois to Evansville Indiana

Dottie: There is an area directly west of Indianapolis and north of Terre Haute that is geographically interesting. But mostly cornfields, barbed wire fences, farm houses, and grain silos. Lot of small towns along the way, but I don%26#39;t recall any particularly great places to eat. I have to admit I have never driven highway 41 the whole length of the state. Don%26#39;t know about highway 63 but I do know that the drive through central Illinois is tedious too. There is honestly no real good way to get to Evansville from the north. There is no real direct route from Indy to Evansville either. I can%26#39;t say for sure but seems to me that taking I57 to I64 may be faster all the way around, and possible more convenient.

Highway 41 from Chicago Ilinois to Evansville Indiana

    Hi DottieM,

If you are in a hurry, I would take HonkHonk%26#39;s route of I-57 to I-64.

IN-63 is a newer divided 4 lane highway from Carbondale to Terre Haute. It goes around the small towns and has a higher speed limit. US-41 the old 2 lane road in this section. It goes thru the small towns and has a top speed limit of 55.

If you have some time to stop along the way, I would take US-41 to IN-47 and stop at Turket Run State Park. This park has been a favorite of mine since I was a child. A great place to go canoeing. More info at: http://www.turkeyrunstatepark.com/

The only restaurant I can think of north of Terra Haute would be the Beef House at IN-63 and I-74. We usually go for the lunch specials. http://www.beefhouserolls.com/

    Enjoy your trip!

There%26#39;s also Rockville, IN which is home to the covered bridge festival. It%26#39;s a bit off season but there are still plenty of covered bridges to drive through if you choose to take the more senic route.

    water park

Can a family use the water park if you are a local? If so, what is the cost.

    water park

Yes, I am pretty sure you can just get a one day entrance fee. Not sure of the cost. I know they have a website - I%26#39;d check that out.

    Lodging in French Lick

We will be driving thru town and hope to spend the night. What else is there in town other than the resort? I am aware of the Comfort Suites but the rate for this coming Friday is approximately $130. Would prefer something a little less costly. Thanks.

    Lodging in French Lick

There is Lane%26#39;s Motel and Michael T%26#39;s Motels in French Lick. Both will run you somewhere in the area of $60.00 - $75.00 per night double occupancy.

Good place for a family reunion?

We%26#39;re trying to find a centrally located place for an informal family reunion for this summer. Somewhere in southwestern Michigan, northwestern Indiana or northeastern Illinois would be best.

We haven%26#39;t gotten together in way too long, and we%26#39;d just like a place to reconnect and have a good time. Obviously we%26#39;d need something that works for all age groups with a variety of activities. For lodging, we%26#39;d need a hotel rather than a vacation home because I%26#39;m not sure how many people would be able to make it, and it would only be for the weekend.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give us!

Good place for a family reunion?

Pokagon State Park might work for you. It is near Angola, IN. In the summer, there is a beach for swimming, jet skiing, etc. There is also a hotel, cottages and restaurant. Horseback riding as well.

Good place for a family reunion?

Karrie: I might suggest Dunes State Park in Chesterton, which is adjacent to Dunes National Lakeshore. Camping is not so great there (in my opinion) because of all the sand, but it%26#39;s a great place for a reunion. Chesterton has hotels, and Michigan City is about 20 minutes away with many hotels. Chesterton is a great little town. This is in northwestern Indiana on Lake Michigan.

I like Pokagon as well. We always have fun there %26amp; it%26#39;s very family friendly. A place I%26#39;ve never been , but looks cool is Starved Rock State Park in Illinois. It has a lodge %26amp; interesting hiking trails (similar to Turkey Run State Park in Indiana.) It may be farther than you want to travel. Chesterton near the Dunes State Park is nice as well.

You beat me to the punch Honk. Funny.

    Much appreciated.

I actually ate there last week and it wasn%26#39;t a delightful experience. The service was terrible and the food tasted...really gross. Just to save you some dignity...don%26#39;t waste your time eating there. Try Eddie Marlow%26#39;s.

    Weekend Downtown with Young Kids?

We are spending a weekend downtown with my 3 and 5 year olds...we def. plan on going to the children%26#39;s museum on Sunday, but will be spending Saturday at the hotel (Marriott downtown) and want to explore downtown without having to drive. What are some good things to do, resturants, places to go, etc. with children this age?

    Weekend Downtown with Young Kids?

Faithful: Well, going to the Children%26#39;s Museum is the first best thing to do. That will be a full day. I don%26#39;t usually recommend the zoo because I think they charge too much, but it%26#39;s probably a great option for kids that age. Those are the two main attractions that come to my mind that are geared toward kids that young. The state museum might be lost on young children although there are a few cool things there for little kids. They might like just looking at the big monumnet on the circle and may even enjoy the museum in the basement of the Indiana war memorial (it%26#39;s free). The Old Spaghetti Factory has a street car thing in it that kids like. Here%26#39;s a site to browse around.

    http://www.indydt.com/home.cfm

    Weekend Downtown with Young Kids?

I love these posts...I live downtown and have a 2yr old, so I%26#39;m happy to share my suggestions! HonkHonk has given some great suggestions as well! You%26#39;ll definitely need a full day at the Children%26#39;s Museum. I suggest getting there when they open on Sunday. Definitely fewer people, and go to the displays you want to see the most first. The crowds really hit around noon.

There is plenty to do with younger children on Saturday, too. If you don%26#39;t want to spend the money at the Zoo, then I suggest just walking over to the canal. It is very close to the Marriott. You can rent a surry bike (the vendor is on the west side of the Indiana State Museum) and bike to the end of the canal (it goes about a mile north...but a very easy walk or ride.) Walking is not bad either. There is enough to distract younger children...small park-like areas, ducks swimming in the water. Check out the White River State Park website: http://www.in.gov/whiteriver/about/green.html

We walk along the canal regularly. My son loves running along the water and feeding the ducks. We also enjoy going to the restaurant at the north end of the canal - Creation Cafe - on a nice day. They have outdoor dining, which is perfect with a child that doesn%26#39;t want to sit and wait. We let him play by the water while the food is coming. VERY casual and great child%26#39;s (and adult) menu.

Another good eating option on the canal is Sky City Cafe in the Eiteljorg Museum. You do not need to pay admission to eat at the restaurant. There%26#39;s outdoor seating overlooking the canal, and another fantastic child%26#39;s menu.

I suggest just taking it easy on Saturday and enjoy a leisurely day. Enjoy the White River State Park and Monument Circle (as HonkHonk suggested). You can get ice cream (or chocolates) at South Bend Chocolate Company right on the Circle. And with kids that age, Old Spaghetti Factory is an excellent choice for dinner. They are geared towards children. But get there early...after 6pm there%26#39;s a wait, especially on weekends.

    Have fun!

How did your trip go? We are leaving this Friday from Chi-town, and driving right down to Pigeon Forge for two nights at a beautiful resort, then moving on to my sister-in-laws in North Carolina for a few nights...I am totally lost on my way home, we are thinking Indy, but we really like to go out to dinner and have a couple drinks maybe but we have the kids (who are 1 and 3) so we want to stay in an area that is really nice, safe and walking distance to cute shops and good food and drinks!! We can splurge a little on the hotel if necessary.

The other options were Nashville, Louisville or just going back to Pigeon Forge for a couple of nights if we like it.

Any advice is appreciated!! Thank you so much, hope you had a great time!

Cell phone service on IU campus?

My daughter will be starting her freshman year at IU in August %26#39;09. During our recent visit she found that she had weak cell phone reception on campus. We have Cingular and she%26#39;s coming from California (if that makes any difference at all). Can anyone tell me what your experiences with cell phone reception are? We are locked into a contract for another year and don%26#39;t want to switch if we can avoid it, but we want to make sure she has reliable service. Thanks!

Cell phone service on IU campus?

I too have Cingular; actually AT%26amp;T now, wasn%26#39;t the merger, purchase or whatever nationwide, so I can speak from experience.

I%26#39;ve not noticed any problems on campus, but then I don%26#39;t spend tons of time there trying to use my phone.

    A few comments/thoughts:

    1) I can say from experience that different phones can have a MAJOR influence. My brother and I have the same carrier, but had different phones (I actually have a 3rd model now). There were many cases were his reception was terrible compared to mine (haven%26#39;t had the new one long enough to say for sure if there is any real difference, but I don%26#39;t notice any problems).

    2) Were you (trying) to use 3G? Bloomington does not currently have 3G coverage by AT%26amp;T (formerly Cingular). It is (supposedly) scheduled to come on line this summer. Anyway if you were set to use 3G and weren%26#39;t able to, I suppose that might have caused some problems.

    3) When exactly were you here and what were things like on campus (crowds etc)? I have noticed problems with my reception when I am at locations where I know the cell is being heavily used and/or overloaded. I can imagine this happening on campus if it was crowed with students, parents, visitors, etc. (which would not always be the case).

    4) Are you talking campus wide weak coverage? The campus is very large and I can easily imagine having weak coverage in some portions, but not others. If you travelled the whole campus and noticed weak bars everywhere, I might be ';concerned'; (that%26#39;s really too strong a word, but . . .) On the other hand, if you only tried to use it in one or two (close proximity) locations . . . .

    5) Not sure where in CA you%26#39;re from, but we do have hills, large building etc which can have a definite impact on coverage in terms of causing dead/weak coverage areas, quite often of a very limited nature. I literally have walked a block or two and seen some pretty dramatic changes in ';bars'; on my phone.

Anyway, that a few comments/things for you to think about/consider.

Be glad to answer other question regarding your daughter VISITING Bloomington (remember TA policy re: other concepts which might be more applicable to your daughter%26#39;s situation - see some of the other (closed) posts on this forum if you aren%26#39;t catching my drift).

    Car Rental

Flying in on June 3 and driving to Ohio. Looks like car rental is a little high. Has anyone used Hotwire or Priceline to name your own price to rent a car?

    thanks for the help!

    C

    Car Rental

I use Hotwire.com all the time, but I don%26#39;t do a name your own price. They give the rates per day, you accept it, you pay for it, after that you find out the car rental company you got. Hotwire only uses the big name car rental companies..........Avis, Hertz, Budget, Alamo, can%26#39;t remember who else but all are good.

    Car Rental

I like Alamo becuase of their unlimited mileage

I haven%26#39;t done the research to see if this would work, but -- if the hotwire/priceline thing doesn%26#39;t pan out -- you might look to see if rates are lower at non-airport pickup sites. If so, you might be able to take a relatively cheap cab ride to one of these places. Not too convenient, but it could possibly save some bucks. Just Google it to see locations close to the airport but not at the airport.

I also have an National Emerald Club membership through my job. I can get rates as cheap as $17/day nationwide. I think they charge $50 to join or so, but you may be money ahead in the long run especially if you rent a lot.

Need advice on airport parking when traveling alone

Can anyone offer advice on the best place to park at the airport or it can be off site for a person traveling alone? My return flight comes in at 12:30 a.m. and I want somewhere where I will feel safe that hour of the morning. I have already checked out Ace Rent-a-Car, but not sure. Thanks!

Need advice on airport parking when traveling alone

I think you will be safe in the long term parking lot. If you have concerns, I%26#39;m sure the shuttle driver will either deliver you close to your car or make sure you get there. They are very friendly %26amp; helpful, especially if not too busy at odd hours like that.

    SB2

Need advice on airport parking when traveling alone

I%26#39;ve used ';Park,Ride,%26amp; Fly'; before. Call when you get your luggage and they are there in about 5 minutes with a shuttle right to the trunk of your car. I%26#39;m nt exactly sure where their place is at the new terminal

Depending how long you%26#39;ll be gone and how much money is okay to spend, I would suggest the parking garage on the 3rd level as close to the terminal entrance as possible. That should make it a quick trip to your car from the terminal and probably not the area someone would choose for bad behavior. It%26#39;s $16/day. If you park in long term or economy ($11 and $7 respectively), try to park close to the shuttle drop off points; you can get to your car quicker. If you want to use a service, Metro Parking and, as mentioned above, Park Ride and Fly are two services that I have been happy with.

I agree with a previous poster. We have always used Park, Ride %26amp; Fly. They take care of everything. I haven%26#39;t been to their new location yet, but at their old one, you just pull up, and hand them your keys. You can pre-register on-line, so that all you do is give them your print out, and get on their shuttle to the airport - they have already loaded your luggage. When you get back, they pick you right up and have your car running for you at their location. So much stress avoided!

I have used Park Ride N Fly at both the old and new locations. It is very convenient. When you return, the car is warmed up for you and ready to go. You can make a reservation online. Also they have a new program where you can sign up for a rewards card that you swipe to enter and exit their lot (it automatically bills to your credit card).

In my experience, I have found that their shuttle buses run very frequently (even with the greater distance to the new terminal from their new location).

Looking for a hotel with 2+ bedroom suites in Northern IN

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks!

Where in Northern Indiana are you interested in? That would make a difference in what we could suggest.

Looking for a hotel with 2+ bedroom suites in Northern IN

Really we don%26#39;t have a specific destination yet. We would prefer to stay on the eastern to central side but if there is a great place further west we%26#39;re definately open to that too :)

I%26#39;m sure other people may have better ideas, but Swan Lake Resort outside Plymouth has cabins that would work for you. Otherwise there%26#39;s Comfort Suites in South Bend or Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City, but these just have bedrooms with living areas (pull out sofa bed) attached. The Hilton garden Inn in Chesterton has ';Junior'; suites with the same arrangement. Chesterton is nice...close to the Dunes State Park %26amp; has a quaint downtown area.

Another idea is the Potawatomi Inn at Pokagon State Park. It%26#39;s at the far east end of Northern Indiana. They have Cabin suites which might work. It%26#39;s a nice park. We always enjoy our time there.

The potawatami inn was our first choice but they are booked. I will look into the other suggestions.

    Thanks so much.

Depending on when you are coming in, I do know of a Condo with 3 bedrooms in South Bend that might be available if it is not a Notre Dame home game weekend.

    parking delays

I%26#39;m fairly new at attending the race. With a parking pass, I%26#39;ve expected to have and easier time getting in, but the traffic congestion has made it difficult at best. I have noticed that a number of cars are escorted into the area. Is this a service? If so, how do I take advantage of it?

    parking delays

Unless you are a dignitary/celebrity, are part of a group that has secured an escort - you will have sit in line with everyone else. A parking pass will get you into a designated lot - but will not help get through the traffic. Best bet is to get there EARLY.

Long-time Expert Advisor OB is likely the one who will know (I%26#39;m guessing you can, but have absolutely no idea how to go about it without driving the area in advance an looking for signs or asking folks in the immediate area - there may be advertisements for this in the local paper or Craig%26#39;s list).

OB - you out there ?!

private parking on 16th street for 500

OB HERE!!! I%26#39;m not sure of any pre arranged parking on 16th Street. The problem is you never know how the police are going to block of the street. Usually they don%26#39;t let you make a left turn if you are heading west on 16th. O%26#39;Brien Floor Covering (3521 16th St www.obfloors.com) is about a half mile from the main entrance of they track, BUT, is on the south side of the street. They will be charging $10 per car on race day (believe me I know). If you get there early enough, before 8 a.m. you can ususually find a way to make a U Turn or make a left turn. parking on the south side of 16th st makes for better leaving after the race. Most lots will be charging $20. or more and of course will go up the closer you get to the track. Also, SOMETIMES, yo might talk an officer into opening up a barricade, if you%26#39;re nice, and letting you thru. Advice, try to get close to the track asap like no later than 9. It%26#39;s easy to kill time before you go in or just have fun roaming aroung inside the grounds of the track. GO, BUDDY LAZIER in the #91 hemelgarn car

    Indy 500 weekend?

I%26#39;m heading to Indianapolis from Chicago for the Indy 500 with my boyfriend . We are leaving early on Sat the 23rd of May and have tix for the race. Does anyone know how General Admission tickets work, since that is what we got. Also what are some things we can do on Sat when we arrive? We will head back home on Monday the 25th of May.

    Thanks, Leslie

    Indy 500 weekend?

General Admission tickets get you into the massive infield area of the track. Prime infield viewing areas are typically difficult to come by, as people stake-out their claims on the viewing mounds and such pretty early on Race Day morning. But if it%26#39;s just you and your boyfriend, you%26#39;ll probably be o.k. (larger groups might have to split up).

Among the great spots to check out:

First Turn (probably the most difficult to find a good viewing area, and also the most exciting infield place to be at the start of the race).

Exit to Turn Two - watch the door get slammed on drivers attempting to complete short-chute passes

End of Back Straight/Entrance to Turn Three - many great passes are completed here, and the drivers jockey for proper entrance position into the turn.

North Chute and Turn Four - also very popular spectator mounds here; plenty of action in the short chute leading to Turn Four.

Turn Four exit and beginning of main straight - see %26#39;em heading for the green flag - the GREATEST MOMENT IN ALL OF SPORTS - or the checkered flag; as with Turn Two, much action as drivers complete - or attempt to complete - short chute passes.

You may also want to move around from area to area as the race progresses, to see the different types of action in the different locations (including some of the infield action that still occurs, although it%26#39;s WAYYYY more tame than the good ol%26#39; days in the 70%26#39;s and 80%26#39;s).

Bring plenty of food and drink (check IMS website for restrictions on coolers - I think 15'; coolers are as big as you can bring in), and plenty of sunscreen, and be ready for a diversity of pre-, post-, and during race action ...

I%26#39;ll leave it to others to help you with things to do on Saturday. HAVE A GREAT TIME AT THE RACE! I%26#39;m envious ! !

    Indy 500 weekend?

Depending on what time you get to town on Saturday, you could check out The 500 Festival parade in downtown. I think it starts at 11:00. It%26#39;s the third biggest parade in the US behind macy%26#39;s Thanksgiving and The Rose Bowl parades. Tix available online at 500festival.com or there are places to view for free. Usually takes about two hours and all 33 drivers will be in the parade in the new Camaro convertibles! Plenty of things to do in downtwon Indy, depending on what you like. On race day be prepared to leave early! Remember there will be upwards of 200,000 spectators so traffic will be HEAVY! If tired of te infield you might be able to get in seats on the north end between turns 3 and 4. In the past few years there have been some empty seats. Be prepared to do a lot of walking. IMS is a two and a half mile oval AND BE SURE to make sure you have a good view for the START of the race, the most exciting event in sports!!!

thank you both so much for all the info.

One more thing ... It used to be kind of easy to park inside the track on Race Day. With the re-jiggering of the golf course, and the creation of the infield road course for F1 and MotoGP, infield parking was cut by more than 50%. If you get your car in line the night before the 500, or VERY early on Race Day (before 5a) - you MIGHT park inside the track. Otherwise, you%26#39;ll have to walk in.

If walking in, your parking spot becomes pretty critical - - if you want to sit in Turn One, the South Chute, or Turn Two, you don%26#39;t want to park in the North 40 (the large lot on the north side of the track, accessible via 30th St.) or the Coke lot (northwest of the track. You%26#39;ll want to park at the abandoned strip mall across the track on 16th Street, or any of the pay lots on 16th St. or Georgetown Road near the track. And if you want to sit in Turns Three or Four, or the North Chute, or the north ends of the front or back straight - the North 40 or the Coke lots are better options.

In my recent experience, the 16th Street parking tends to get you in and out quicker than the north options (although ';quick'; is a relative term here, walking through the sea of humanity after the race is an adventure in and of itself ... and the lines to exit the parking areas and clear the congested areas can take from only a few minutes to an hour or more).

As stated previously, if you get in early enough on Saturday the parade is an otpion, if you like parades. You could hang out downtown the rest of the day especially if it is nice weather. Walk the canal, visit the circle, etc. Also, might want to check out Broad Ripple. If you are into patying people hang out around the track on Saturday night but I would not do it. Next time consider coming into town thursday night and partaking in ';Carb Day'; festivities, it is a lot of fun and it gives you a chance to see the track and familiarize yourself with drivers. It is an all day event with a concert at the end (this year is 3 doors down). As far as race day, try to be in the first turn for the start it is an unbelievable scene. But touring around to different spots is a great suggestion. My wife and I went with a few couples 2or3 years ago and I have been a number of times. I always get seats in turn one and my wife and the other girls actually walked around the infield during the race. Just remember to give yourself plenty of time before and after and don%26#39;t expect to get anywhere quickly you will never see as many people in one event for the rest of your life. Enjoy the Indy 500!

What would be the best time to get to the race track?

What time should we leave out of indianapolis? Is there only one entrance? Which might be the easiest to get into if there are multiples.

    Thanks again!

There are a number of entrances on Race Day. The one you want to use will depend on where you want to sit for the race.

There are several entrances along 16th St. - the south side of the track. Enter here if you%26#39;re wanting to sit near Turns 1 or 2, the south chute, or the south to middle end of the back stretch. There are entrances along Georgetown Road, if you find a parking space in one of the spots along Georgetown Rd (a bit harder to reach on Race Day than most of the others), you%26#39;ll enter about halfway down the main straight - and could easily go to Turn 1, Turn 4, or the north end of the main straight. The north entrances (off of 30th St.) give you good access to Turns 3 and 4, the north chute, the north end of the backstretch, and the north ends of the two long straightaways.

Almost whichever way you go, you should leave at least four hours before the race - - many leave six or more hours before the race to take in all of the festivities and the high and low-brow pagentry associated with the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. Count on at least two hours to get out (may be shorter, but would be good to mentally be prepared for 2 or more, depending on where you park).
