clitty falls

The photos of the inn at Cliffy Falls looks really nice...has anyone been there recently? Does it resemble the pictures?

Is water going over the falls or is autumn a bad time to go?

Would the Riverboat Inn be a nicer place to stay?

Hubby and I thank you....

clitty falls

The falls in autumn will still have water, but at a much lower level than late winter or spring. We like the Inn at Clifty Falls. We stayed there last fall %26amp; enjoyed it. One problem we had though was noise from the power plant below. We%26#39;d never noticed it before. I have never stayed at the Riverboat Inn, but my mom just returned from there %26amp; loved it. I had recommended it based on reviews here %26amp; she called me gushing about it. It%26#39;s on our list for next time!

Dining suggestions near Huntington, Wabash and Fort Wayne

I will be staying in Hutington in December and attending a concert in Wabash. Any dining recommendations? Casual dining is best. Dinners up to $15 are the general price range I am looking for.

We will also be traveling up to Fort Wayne, so any suggestions in that area would be helpful.

No chains, just local restaurants please.

Dining suggestions near Huntington, Wabash and Fort Wayne

For casual dining, my friends (and their kids) loved the restaurant in the historic train depot in Huntington. They went several times during their visit to relatives, mainly because the trains go RIGHT by you.

I wanted to mention this next one because it%26#39;s delicious. While it isn%26#39;t casual, it%26#39;s not stuffy either. You could go for lunch to stay within your price range. It%26#39;s in a small (blink and you miss it) town just outside of Fort Wayne, and the reason they stay in business is that it%26#39;s worth the drive!

Dining suggestions near Huntington, Wabash and Fort Wayne

My favorite non-chain restaurant in Wabash is Market Street Grill. Get details, hours, menus, etc. at:

www.msgrill.com

Some entrees are more than $15, but you can eat there for $15 if you choose carefully and omit the appetizers, desserts, etc., though that is hard to do!

One of the entrees I like is the Drunk%26#39;in Chicken. I always get the BLT soup (two sides come with the meal).

If you go, you will want to get there early. They don%26#39;t take reservations, and sometimes the wait can be kind of long.

It is not considered a family restaurant; in fact they say you have to be 21+ or 18-21 with a person over 21.

The location is in historic downtown Wabash. The restaurant%26#39;s atmosphere is fun with all kinds of ';junk'; decorating the walls and a model train running around above the bar. Dress is casual. They serve lunch Tuesday through Friday, but the lunch menu is mostly soups/salads/sandwiches. They are closed Sunday and Monday.

Aztecaz Mexican Grill is also located in one of the old store buildings in downtown Wabash, and it has good food. The atmosphere is bright and cheery. It has two rooms, one for family dining and one with a bar (smoking section).

In Huntington, Nick%26#39;s Kitchen is a little downtown cafe that is known as the place that invented breaded tenderloin sandwiches. It%26#39;s not fancy or fine dining by any means but it%26#39;s a fun little place. I think it may only be open for breakfast and lunch, but I%26#39;m not sure.

Thanks for the great ideas SomeOne123!

I%26#39;m definitely going to the Market Street Grill next time I%26#39;m in Wabash! The menu looks delicious. The BLT soup sounds so tempting! I read the recipe on the website--definitely not a low-fat dish!:-) I%26#39;ll check out your other suggestions, too.

Hopefully we%26#39;ll get up there again soon!

Lily

There is a place in Roanoke which is between Huntington and Fort Wayne that we used to go to when we lived in Ft. Wayne, it is called the Village Inn. It is on a corner in dowtown Roanoke, they are famous for their broiled Haddock and Lyonnaise potatoes! Very family friendly only drawback I don%26#39;t remember them having a non-smoking section. Indiana is still in the dinosaur ages when it comes to smoking.

Other inexpensive places to try would be Buffalo Wings %26amp; Curls, right off of 24 in SW Ft Wayne, Cas D%26#39;Angelo on 24 in SW FW. Don%26#39;t miss the Casaburo salad, yum. Both are very inexpensive unless things have changed dramatically since we moved away.

Jefferson Point further down Route 24 (intersection of 24 and 14) also will have a variety of restaurants to choose from, some chains such as Chick-Filet, etc.

You must visit the Casa Restaurant in Ft Wayne. It is on Jefferson Ave, just off exit 102 from I-69. I promise you will love the italian meal you choose. Great food and very resonable prices.

Ringling Brothers Circus

Took the family to the Circus last night. The performances my wife and daughter loved the tigers and the high wire act. They had fun. I was shocked that the only way to get cotton candy was to buy a cheap high hat for $12 and get the cotton candy for free. What! Also buy a animal cup for $12 and get a free shaved ice. I shouldn%26#39;t be surprised by these carnie marketing tactics. Or is it just me?

Ringling Brothers Circus

Everyone should be shocked by the way they treat their animals!

  • What is there to do?

What is there to do in Indianapolis? I was planing on coming next week. I have never been before.

    What is there to do?

What are your interests. Are you married , or have children, or single. Lots of restaurants, shopping , museums, and sporting events. Just another metropolitan city as any other. Check out indy.org for some more information.

    What is there to do?

Sorry about not leaving enough info. It will be 2 adults and one 15 yr old. We aren%26#39;t interested in the clubs and bars. Are there good museums, or something else touristy? And what are the must see attractions and places? Does the city have public transportation? Thanks for the help.

Plenty to do. First, public transportation isn%26#39;t the best around here, but in downtown there is plenty of parking and it is easily walked. In the midddle of downtown is The Soldiers and Sailors Monument (The Circle). There is a Civil War Museum under it. There is The Indiana State Museum on Washington and West St. Also next doot to it is The NCAA Hall of Fame (not sure if it is open due to a fire). You an walk The Canal. Towards the north end is The USS Indianapolis Memorial (one of my faves.) The Vietnam Memorial is on the cnal just behind the State Museum. The State Capitol Building is downtown. Shopping downtown includes The Circle centre Mall. Not too far from downtown (north on Meridian St to 16th st and west about 4 miles) is The Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Drive right under the track to the museum there. (only $3.00) Farther north on Meridian to 30th St is he Indianapolis Childen%26#39;s Museum. Don%26#39;t be fooled by the name, adults loveit too. Up to 38th St and west about 2 miles is Crown Hill Cemetary. It has the highest natural point in Indy. On a clear day it%26#39;s worth going up to ';The Crown'; where famd Hoosier poet james Whitcomb Riley is buried. Stop inside the funeral home for free info. Next door to crown Hill is he IndianapolisArt Museum. Saturday (1o/11) should be pretty busy downtown, I think he Colts play, is it the curently undefeated Titans?

I believe it is the Baltimore Ravens.

I%26#39;ll add to the great suggestions already given: the Indiana State Museum also has an IMAX theater. The museum has a special chocolate exhibition that starts tomorrow and runs through January (I%26#39;m anxious to check that out myself!). Also downtown is the Indianapolis Zoo, which is pretty nice.

And tuesdaynight is right, the Colts play the Ravens on 10/12.

I guess we forgot about eats. You can find just about anything downtown. Do you have any preferences?

    where to stay?

I am looking for a safe place close to both the airport and downtown area. I am not really picky but would like to be able to get up and walk in the morning without worrying about my safety. I will be there in January.

    where to stay?

Probably downtown is the best. If the weather is too cold ou can walk inside The Circle Centr Mall

    where to stay?

Agree with OB. Nothing close to the airport that%26#39;s anything more than a place to lay your head down for a night.

Downtown Indy is very compact - even in the dead of winter it%26#39;s easy to navigate the approximately 20 block square that contains most of what people are interested in doing on a visit - restaurants, entertainment, lively bars, etc. And much of the ';navigation'; can be accomplished indoors, in the event of inclement weather.

There are plenty of hotels, serving a wide range of tastes and budgets in that area, ranging from the high end Conrad to the budget-minded hotels (Holiday Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, etc.).

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency downtown. Great stay and much to do. Advise that you put a bid in on Priceline for the downtown area for a 3.5 star hotel.

  • Cheap parking downtown?

Anyone know of any cheap parking near the Westin Hotel? I will be staying there Oct. 10th thru 14th and again on the 18th.

    Cheap parking downtown?

Not sure where the westin is located, but we found a garage that charges $12/day. It is located just a half a block from the Hyatt Regency.

Thats not bad the Westin is next door to the Hyatt

    Indianapolis or Cincinnati in November?

    Hello!

I am planning on taking my wife somewhere to celebrate her 30th birthday in late November. We are planning on going Saturday, November 22-Monday, November 24.

We are trying to decide which city- Cincinnati or Indianapolis- would be more fun for us. We are the same age and this will be our first trip away from our 4 month old baby.

We are looking for fun just walking around and relaxing, going to a couple nice restaurants, and perhaps other entertainment in general. We are not that interested in the bar scene anymore, but are interested in seeing a good band (ex: I heard that the Blues bands at the Slippery Noodle are pretty good).

    Can you help us decide?

    - John

    Indianapolis or Cincinnati in November?

(Actually I mis-spoke: we are going Sunday Nov 23-Tuesday Nov 25)

    Indianapolis or Cincinnati in November?

Both are good in my opinion. If you choose Cincinnati I would stay in Newport or Covington area across the river. Staying in downtown Indy does have a lot to offer. Check out indy.org for some more information on downtown. I agree on the Slippery Noodle for good blues, good drinks, and good food. Both cities have good shopping malls downtown. Both cities have great restaurants downtown. It is really up to you or your wife. Any more questions feel free to ask.

I just got back from Indianapolis, the downtown is great. I think much more to offer than Cincy. There is a canal that has been built, which offers a nice walk along a nice trail. Restaurants are abundent and the downtown is very safe. Also there is a casino about 1 hr from downtown if you want a different nite out. I would vote Indy.

I lived in Cincy for a few years and have travled quite a bit to Indy. In my opinon Indy is a much nicer cleaner city. If you do pick Cincy I would also recomend staying in Newport. Vist Newport on the Levee this is a nicer area than downtown with some good resturants right on the river.

Indy also has a good comedy club downtown called Crackers.

Both are great cities. You mentioned in the other thread that you%26#39;ve been to Cincinnati before. In that case, I%26#39;d go with Indianapolis.

Carriage rides downtown at night are romantic. There are a number of good restaurants downtown. You can check www.indy.org to find one that suits your tastes.

The museums in the area are pleasant places to walk around and relax on cold days. Puck%26#39;s restaurant at the art museum is a pretty place for lunch, and the museum is free. For a small fee, you can also go through the Lilly mansion next door. http://www.imamuseum.org/

Even though the canal walk is chilly in November, the museums there are nice and warm. The Eiteljorg is one of my favorites. Definitely check out the steam clock and two story gift shop at the Indiana State Museum too.

    http://www.eiteljorg.org/

    http://www.in.gov/whiteriver/

    http://www.discovercanal.com/

If you would like to feel like a kid again drive north to the Indianapolis Children%26#39;s Museum, the world%26#39;s largest.

    http://www.childrensmuseum.org/

Coming from Columbus on 70, you%26#39;ll be passing right through Richmond, Indiana. I mention this because my favorite spa is there, and your wife might enjoy that as a birthday treat. It%26#39;s the Canteberry Spa in a historic mansion on Old National Road/US 40. The atmosphere is lovely and everyone I know who has been there has loved it.

I hope you have a wonderful time!

(For a nice overview watch this video.)

    indy.org/indianapolis/…

I see you%26#39;re from Columbus, (I%26#39;m originally a Buckeye, too) and I see that you%26#39;re leaving on Sunday, not that particular Saturday. So I think that it may be pertinant to mention that Indianapolis also has the NCAA Hall of Fame.

Aside from that, I%26#39;d agree with everything that has been said. Enjoy the big day!

Jmariegobucks is right. We do have the NCAA Hall of Champions. But it is closed temporarily due to a fire. It is scheduled to re-open by the end of this year, but keep an eye on their website. ncaa.org/hall_of_champions/global/home.htm

Hotel in the East - help!!!

I need to get a comfortable, clean hotel for 1 night on October 23. I%26#39;m not having much luck with the hotels in the East end. I am here for a meeting at Pendleton Pike and E42nd st. I don%26#39;t want to drive too far in morning rush hour to get there. Also, I don%26#39;t want to pay more than 100 bucks. Some places I%26#39;ve looked into are the Quality Inn, LaQuinta, Knights Inn on 21st, Days Inn on 21st or Post. Please give me your advise on any of these. I%26#39;m not really concerned about the area just want a clean restful place to stay for the night.

Hotel in the East - help!!!

Just a heads up the Days Inn, and Knights Inn on 21st get terrible reviews on cleanliness. Watch out. There is a brand new Comfort Inn further out on Pendleton Pike past 56th street in a better area. Might check it out. The is a Ramada Inn right by where your meeting is also. The Laquinta might be OK. Since I live here I don%26#39;t stay in the hotles. There is a Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn on Shadeland avenue and 21st street might be OK. Hope this helps.

Hotel in the East - help!!!

There is a Marriott hotel at 21st and Shadeland as well. Try Priceline a couple of days before you leave. You should easily be able to put a bid in for $60-$75. If that doesn%26#39;t work, La Quinta at 21st and Post is a nice option.

  • Downtown breakfast?

Staying next week 3-4 days downtown (Conrad) and looking for tips of best place/places to have breakfast/lunch.

    Downtown breakfast?

Le Peep has really good breakfast. It is on the corner of Illinois and New York. Patachou at the Park has good breakfasts and lunches; it%26#39;s located inside the Simon Headquarters building. If you%26#39;re looking for a quick breakfast, Dunkin Donuts just opened downtown. As for lunch, there are tons of great places from fast food to fancier sit-down dining.

    Downtown breakfast?

Thanks so much LHW! LePeep is on the list for sure.

I also suggest Le Peep, but want to point out most of their eggs are served basted if not otherwise ordered. I request the more traditional scrambled eggs when ordering a skillet, as I prefer my eggs well done. The peasant potatoes are yummy and juice is fresh squeezed. Gets busy fast on weekends! Also, Einstein Bros Bagels on Illinois is a quicker alternative and offers great egg/bagel sandwiches. Try the Weber Grill Restaurant on Illinois for lunch, can%26#39;t go wrong there, everything is delicious and beautifully presented! Enjoy your stay!

Thanks for the tips! We actually won certificates for Weber Grill so will go there for sure as well! Other evening meals may go with Fogo De Chao or Oceanaire?

Patachou is by far the better choice when choosing between it and Le Peep. It%26#39;s also closer to your hotel. As for dinner, I%26#39;d go to Oceanaire. If you want to go to a non-chain place, try ';R'; Bistro or Elements. Both are outstanding.

I agree with ParisKat. Patachou on the Park is by far the better choice for breakfast. My other personal choices for breakfast are Hoaglins on Mass Ave and City Cafe on Pennsylvania. Both are local restaurants. They are a little bit of a walk, but it%26#39;s a great way to visit the city. Elements and R Bistro are great choices for dinner. Oceanaire is good as well. Depending on when you are in town, Elements is starting breakfast on Saturday/Sunday. That should be great! Check their website for more details. Have fun!

    Restaurant suggestion, eastside I-465

We will be traveling thru the Indy area from the upper northeast side to I-65 South, %26amp; looking for a place to meet our son for dinner, on I-465 somewhere between the Pendleton Pike exit %26amp; I-65 South. Chains like Cracker Barrel, Applebees, Ruby Tuesday are fine. Looking for easy on, easy off I-465 %26amp; fairly quick service. Any suggestions are appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Autumn activities in Brown County?

    Hello,

I%26#39;m relatively new to Indiana and have been recommended Brown County as a great place to visit in the fall. Now that the leaves are peaking, I%26#39;m interested in finding apple/pear orchards where you can pick your own fruit, and places where there are other fun fall activities.

    Any suggestions would be helpful!

    Thanks,

    Sanya

    Autumn activities in Brown County?

When do you plan on going? Prime apple season is thru the end of Oct so you don%26#39;t have much time left. I don%26#39;t know of anywhere that has U-Pick pears or what the season is for them.

    Autumn activities in Brown County?

We want to go this weekend (Oct 19th). What apple orchards can you recommend in the area?

    next weekend

Is there something big going on in Indy next weekend? I%26#39;ll be driving through and have been looking at hotels for a possible stop and a bunch of places are booked.

    next weekend

I%26#39;m betting it%26#39;s the national FFA convention. It%26#39;s in Indy around this time every year, and thousands of kids from all over the U.S. come into town. I see them all over downtown, and I think most hotels throughout the city are always booked up.

    next weekend

    That%26#39;s it! Thanks.

    Hills O'Brown Cabin Rentals

We%26#39;d like to know if anyone has rented a cabin in Brown County through Hills O%26#39;Brown Property Management?

    Thanks

    Hills O'Brown Cabin Rentals

Yes, we have several times, and our experience has been awesome. We stayed in Bird Song cabin, and both our kids and my husband and I loved it (so much that we can%26#39;t bring ourselves to try another one). It was beautiful! We were welcomed with little fairy lights on the porch/deck of the cabin, and beautiful music playing. The cabin and property were beautiful, and the owners (who live nearby) were awesome, too. Experiences were EXCELLENT! We would highly recommend them.

WE stayed in the once upon a cabin site and it was terrible. No working phone or cell phone service.

A graveyard right out the kitchen window and mouse poop in the closet.

    July 9

We would not rent through Hills O brown ever again.! First cabin we were put it was SO moldy and stale smoke smell that we couldn%26#39;t hardly stand to walk in the door. The place was filthy! It was nothing like they described it to us. We demanded a cabin change immediately ( which they did rudely) and the 2nd one was nicer but the carpet was so stained that I wouldn%26#39;t walk on it in my bare feet....let alone let a child crawl around on it. The ';Nice Hot Tub'; they described was so small that my husband and I could not even both get in and fit under the water! The kitchen had all of 1 skillet and a couple dishes in it. Linens were thread bare and the size of a hand towel for bathing, etc. got bit to death in the beds.....YUCK.

It%26#39;s impossible to get anyone to answer the phone in their office for reservations, so if you have a problem it%26#39;s even worse. There are alot of smaller cabin companies/owners that are much more personable and helpful with quality customer service and much cleaner cabins. Try www.premier-cabins.com www.adventurewoodlogcabin.com www.mybrowncountyvacation.com

    www.antlerlogcabins.com

I have dealt with all of these owners/managers and they are great to work with.

My colleague and I just stayed here this past weekend for a conference thinking it might be a nice variation from the standard conference hotel. Upon looking back, I wish we chose the standard conference hotel.

Upon our arrival, we were astonished to see not just the usual lady bugs that are a nuisance this time of year, but hundreds (no exaggeration) of flies and wasps in the bedrooms. The first 30-40 minutes of our stay were spent vacuuming the insects. We were able to get rid of them in the main floor bedroom, but we gave up on the upstairs room since there were so many.

My bedspread was covered in dirt. Then I realized that the dirt was not only on the top cover, but also in the sheets!

These issues made us find other problems, i.e. dust on the dining room table, cobwebs along the wall, hair in the shower, no hanger for the shower towel, no toilet tissue holder, leftover trash and food from previous guests, the inability to watch a PG-13 movie on HBO due to parental control, the lack of directions for the gas fireplace, crumbs in the cracks of the couch, and of course additional flies and wasps in the living room.

I called the office management to complain before our second night to ask for a refund of some sort, but they said that they couldn%26#39;t control mother nature and that they did wash and change the sheets. I understand to a point that there will be insects in the middle of the woods that might get into the building, but for $200/night, I expect that I shouldn%26#39;t have to deal with hundreds of them and I should be able to feel clean in the sheets at night. I also haven%26#39;t received a refund.

AS for the hotel, yes it%26#39;s west of the zoo, I%26#39;d say probably 10 or 15 minutes. And yes it%26#39;s a nice and safe area. It%26#39;s at the Plainfield exit right off of I-70. There are several hotels and restaurants there. I%26#39;ve stopped at that exit many times.

Help any Indy Zoo discounts? Plainfield/indy airport super8?

Plainfield is a nice suburb area growing city with lots going for it. The zoo does accept AAA discount if you have your membership card. Parking is $5.00. Our family are members. We really enjoy visiting the zoo on a regular basis. Check out downtown if its not too crowded after the zoo. Lots to do there as well. Enjoy.

    Newest nicest hotel???

I%26#39;ve stayed at the Marriott downtown and have no complaints. Good location with museums, concert venues and plenty of restaurants/pubs within walking distance. Reasonable hotel parking. My room was clean and comfortable, just your typical Marriott. Customer service was top notch and the on-site bar has a decent beer selection. Outside of downtown you%26#39;ll find plenty of standard hotel (and restaurant) chains at nearly every highway exit.

    Newest nicest hotel???

I like the Marriott Residence Inn in Mishawaka. They have a great hot breakfast, free and safe parking, and I think are relatively new construction. Very close to restaurants and shopping (in case you need anything).

I live in the area. A new Hyatt Place just opened in Mishawaka. I haven%26#39;t stayed there, but have stayed in several others in Indiana and have always had a good experience. Another idea is the Varsity Club in Mishawaka. It%26#39;s a neat place. Both are near restaurants and shopping.

Well drove into SB on southside and on Hwy 31 a BRAND new Comfort Suites and it was wonderful. All new and clean.....nice surprise. I would highly recommend it.

    The Columbia Club- I'm confused!

It was my understanding that the Columbia Club in downtown Inday was for private members or their guests. But, I saw that you can book the room on Expedia or other sites. Can I book a room on one of these travel sites without being a member? If I so, are there any special fees for nonmembers??

Thanks in advance for any advice you might be able to give.

    The Columbia Club- I'm confused!

The Columbia Club, like many ';private'; places in these times are looking for ways to generate money so they do have a few rooms to book. It is right in the middle of downtown on ';The Circle';. There used to be two ';clubs'; in downtown Indy. The Columbia Club and The Indianapolis Athletic Club (at Vermont and Meridian Streets). The IAC, I believe was taken over by a major hotel chain and now has condos in it and still has the private area. The Columbia Club was the place where the republcan party went and The Indianapolis Athletic Club is where the democrats belonged (or visa versa). I have been in the CC once or twice and it is nice

    The Columbia Club- I'm confused!

Yep, you%26#39;re right about the general affiliations of the two clubs.

This past June, I booked ten rooms at the CC, yet am not a member. No hassles at all, terrific front desk service both for reservations and for check-in and out.

If booking the Columbia Club, ask for the newly remodeled rooms that face the Circle. Lacking availability of those, ask for any other newly remodeled rooms. All will be nice to very nice - the rooms not yet remodeled (if there are any that haven%26#39;t been remodeled now) are (were) not-so-nice. The rooms are small, but well appointed - and the club is a classic - with a very nice bar and dining room. The bar was a GREAT place for my business associates to gather for a couple of drinks before heading out for a night on the town, and the public sitting areas are quite out-of-the-ordinary in comparison to those of your run-of-the-mill hotels.

unless you like waking up at 1 am to barking dogs in the next room, this hotel is not for you. Had to request shower cap and mouthwash. Also be prepared to pay $25-$30 to park overnight.

    westin-no 4 stars

Did they not respond quickly when you reported the problem to the front desk?

Regardless, $30 is ridiculous for overnight parking in Indianapolis, unless you used valet parking - - then $30 is on the high side of normal. The Westin is the first hotel sold out for conventions, largely due to it%26#39;s immediate proximity to the convention center - maybe that%26#39;s why they try to charge the higher rates.

Maybe they%26#39;ll change if they offend enough patrons.

Have you posted your feedback as a review of that hotel, rather than a general entry on this forum (which doesn%26#39;t do much of anything beyond provoking responses from a couple of us regulars in here)?

  • Hotels near Lucas Oil Stadium

    Hello!

We plan on staying downtown for the weekend of the Kenny concert this summer (2009). We are in between going here or Chicago for the show this year. (We have done Cleveland %26amp; Pittsburgh in the past).

Anyway, at this point, just weighing options. What nice hotels are in a nearby walking distance from the stadium and what other within walking distance attractions are there?

Thanks in advance for the info!

    Hotels near Lucas Oil Stadium

There are plenty of good to excellent hotels within easy walking distance to Lucas Oil Stadium:

    The Conrad (the best)

    Westin

    Omni

    Courtyard by Marriott

    Hilton

    and many more

Indy is one of the most compact cities you%26#39;ll ever encounter, with a two decade design plan that has focused development to serve convention visitors. Within a six square block area you%26#39;ll find a significant number of the city%26#39;s better hotels, restaurants, and other attractions. Among the attractions:

Eiteljorg Museum (Native American and Western art)

    NCAA Hall of Fame Museum

    IMAX Theater

    Indianapolis Zoo

    Canal Walk

(all of the above within the White River State Park complex - about 4 blocks northeast of Lucas Oil)

    Circle Center Mall

Slippery Noodle Inn (lively bar with live blues nightly)

Massachusetts Avenue Complex (about a fifteen minute walk from Lucas Oil - with many great restaurants and bars - the bavarian bar in the Atheneum at Mass. and Michigan is my favorite bar in the city)

Treat yourself to the Conrad and a meal or two at any of the dozens of very nice restaurants in the area, and take in one of the many attractions downtown - - you%26#39;ll be glad you did.

I%26#39;ll stack Indy up against Cleveland and Pittsburgh any day. Chicago? As much as I love Indy - it can%26#39;t compete as a destination with the incredible diversity and sheer numbers of alternatives of Chicago. Only three or four cities in the US can (NY, LA, San Francisco, ... that%26#39;s about it IMO).

    Hotels near Lucas Oil Stadium

I agree with Dave in Indy. Very good comments. Also check out indy.org for some good information on downtown hotels. I think he forgot Las Vegas?

There is a Holiday Inn Select a block away from Lucas Oil. And Yes, DaveInIndy made great comments

Excellent... I am sold on going to the concert in Indianapolis. Most of us have been to Chicago, there is definitely a ton there to do, however, the main focus is going to be the concert with a few little side trips to other attractions/restaurants. If we went to Chicago, we would probably be spending triple the money anyway. So, Indy it is when Kenny time rolls around!!

    Thanks for the input!

I will have to see what the Conrad has to offer when it comes time to book.

The concert event the last of his tour and first in the new stadium was given poor reviews. Due to poor sound in the stadium. Hope next year he plays in the outdoor amphitheater where the sound is great. Just an FYI. Many people said they left early with pounding headaches due to the poor sound in the upper level seating.

Oh wow... thanks for telling me. I wasn%26#39;t thinking about it being an indoor stadium. I most likely will be checking elsewhere, unless he changes venues. What a disappointment....

  • casino

Which casino in the area is the biggest/best. Who has more table games/more slots? Belterra, Argosy or Grand Victoria?

    casino

According to the American Casino Guide:

    Argosy

    Casino Size: 80,000 Square Feet

    Belterra

    Casino Size: 38,000 Square Feet

    Grand Victoria

    Casino Size: 40,000 Square Feet

I was surprised that the Belterra isn%26#39;t listed as being bigger. I%26#39;ve always thought of the Grand Victoria as small and the other two as fairly big, for riverboats.

The Belterra has the largest video poker section of any of them, so that%26#39;s my favorite. The dealers at the Belterra have told me they think Argosy%26#39;s slots are tightest since they are the closest casino to Cincinnati.

    need lakeside cabin rental suggestions

Am looking for lakeside cabin rentals along lake Monroe or lake lemon...preferably lake Monroe. Can anyone help?

    need lakeside cabin rental suggestions

There are several cabin rentals located on Patoka lake in Southern Indiana. My favorite is Patoka%26#39;s Edge retreat which is a private vacation home. It is on the southern part of Patoka lake and is very private with a great view and hot tub. Website is as follows

place to stop with kids along 65 in NW Indiana

I%26#39;ll be traveling from Milwaukee to Indianapolis on Thursday. I%26#39;m looking for a place to get out, run around, have some lunch, etc...probably in the far NW corner of the state. Boys are 3 and 6. I%26#39;ll take a McD with a good playland if it comes to that...but I would rather find a great playground in a nearby town, small pumpkin farm, that kind of thing. It needs to be a relatively short visit as we%26#39;ll try to get to Indy in time to go to the race care museum that afternoon. any suggestions? thanks!

place to stop with kids along 65 in NW Indiana

County Line Orchard would be one stop:

    www.countylineorchard.com

If you%26#39;re looking for indoor, right off of I65 and Rte 30 is a Chuck E Cheese.

Further south is Fair Oaks Farm, a real working dairy that has great grilled cheese sandwiches.

    Hope it helps!

place to stop with kids along 65 in NW Indiana

thank you! I just heard about Fair Oaks, too, but it%26#39;s good to know of something farther north in case everyone is ready for a break earlier.

Fair Oaks is only about 30 min south of Rte 30, so it wouldn%26#39;t be much longer if you%26#39;d rather go there.

good place to eat with young kids, near speedway, airport

Hi, we%26#39;ll be in town tomorrow to see the museum at the speed way and then go to our hotel near the airport. Any suggestions of a good, fun place to eat dinner around that area? Boys are 3 and 6. thanks so much for your suggestions.

good place to eat with young kids, near speedway, airport

Honestly I am not that familiar with Speedway and the airport area. I do know that there are a few chain restaurants in Speedway (Steak n Shake, Applebee%26#39;s, etc.) You will be fairly close to Rick%26#39;s Boatyard a bit off 38th St. exit on I-465 on the west side. It%26#39;s child friendly, and overlooks Eagle Creek Reservior. Very nice setting and keeps my son entertained by watching/feeding the ducks. You are also not far from downtown, where there are many more options that are kid friendly. I%26#39;d recommend Rock Bottom and a walk to the Circle. Or for a little more upscale, Harry and Izzy%26#39;s - also has a children%26#39;s menu. It%26#39;s a local restaurant partially owned by Peyton Manning located right off the Circle Center mall.

    Hope that helps.

  • Dinner & Show

Hi friends. We will be attending the Vinyl Cafe w/Stuart MacLean show at the Hilbert Theater on Sunday night. Any good recommendations on a place to get a bite of dinner before the show? I know Sundays are iffy downtown. Mass Ave area is good or maybe something closer to the theater. Thanks for your help.

    Dinner %26amp; Show

The FFA convention should be wrapping up Sunday night so you might get lucky. Otherwise 55,000 high school kids downtown. What price range and what interests. Plenty to choose from.

    Dinner %26amp; Show

In The Hilton at Illinois and Market Streets is McCormick and Schmick%26#39;s who specialize in seafood. Not over pricey but great and it%26#39;s only about a two to three block walk. The weather is supposed to be cool but dry so the walking possibilities are pretty much endless.

The FFA convention is ending on Saturday. That is good news for you. The Rathskeller is up by the Mass. Ave. area if that interests you.

We like ethnic food %26amp; McCormick %26amp; Schmicks might work. We love seafood. Definitely want to avoid teenagers.

Maybe we%26#39;ll hit something up north on the way down.

    Thanks for the ideas.

Glad the FFA will be gone! What about Barcelona Tapas?

Seems like there%26#39;s a garage on Market St %26amp; we could park, walk over for dinner %26amp; then back for the show.

Just wanted to let everyone know we steered clear of Barcelona after seeing poor reviews. Got to park on the street %26amp; grabbed a bite at Rock Bottom. Worked out great. Thanks for the input.

Good for you making a decision after reading reviews on TA. It is what my wife asks me now when on vacation ';what are their reviews like?';. I have been a restaurant expert with her ever since. I let her look at their websites and menus to get a feel for what we would enjoy. I also enjoy Rock Bottom they don%26#39;t feel like a chain restaurant. Each one is a little different in each city I.E. the local flavors %26amp; names of the micro brews. Parking on the street is easy on the weekends if you know the one way streets downtown.

We liked Rock Bottom %26amp; it was a good plan to get there early %26amp; find parking before other people came for the show. We parked a block from the theater %26amp; got out quickly afterward. So far TA has not steered me wrong. I just pay attention to other contributers travel patterns to see if they match ours. And I%26#39;m happy to see good info about Indy from you %26amp; the other frequent fliers here.

    What to Do?

Visiting in-laws in Muncie... what%26#39;s fun to do? Bars, dancing, or am I just kidding myself?

    Thanks!

    What to Do?

There are lots of bars, it%26#39;s a college town. I haven%26#39;t been there in 13 yrs, so won%26#39;t be much help. Do get pizza at Pizza King though, it is delicious!

    What to Do?

I love Pizza King%26#39;s Royal Feast. Whenever I go back for a visit, I make sure I stop off at a Pizza King for a Royal Feast Pizza.

  • brewpubs?

My brothers and I will be in Indianapolis this weekend doing campaign work, and my brother is celebrating his birthday. I%26#39;m looking for a place like a brewpub that we could go to on Saturday to celebrate. We are all middle-aged people (4 of us). We will have a car. If no brewpubs, someplace with lots of different types of beers would be great. Thanks in advance.

    brewpubs?

Where are you staying? If you are downtown, I recommend the Rathskeller. It%26#39;s a German Restaurant/bar with lots of beers to select from. It%26#39;s got a mix of ages in the crowd, so you%26#39;d feel comfortable. Also downtown is the Slippery Noodle. It%26#39;s the oldest bar in town. Both bars have entertainment on the weekends.

We have a lot of chain brewpubs downtown, too - Rock Bottom, The Ram, etc.

Broad Ripple Brewpub (in Broad Ripple) is nice too, but the other Broad Ripple bars are more the college-age crowds.

    I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll get more suggestions... :-)

    brewpubs?

If you happen to be far north we have Barley Island here in Noblesville. Locally owned. It%26#39;s hard to beat the Rathskeller for beer %26amp; the ambiance of the historic building.

Broad Ripple Brew Pub is the oldest and best brewpub in town. I recommend the ESB and the Wee Heavy. If you are downtown and prefer not to drive, then Alcatraz, Rock Bottom and The Ram are all within walking distance from one another. These three are chains and I don%26#39;t find their beer distinctive enough, but to each his own. Though they don%26#39;t brew their own beer, I agree that the Rathskellar is great. For best beer selection, I suggest J. Gumbo%26#39;s on Maryland Street. The owner knows his beer and has a great, rotating selection.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Actually, we%26#39;ll be driving back to Chicago afterwards (don%26#39;t worry, birthday boy won%26#39;t be driving), are looking for an early dinner around 6, I imagine - luckily we gain an hour coming back plus we%26#39;ll gain an hour of sleep. Prefer one of the local ones that we don%26#39;t have at home. Again, thanks for the suggestions.

Have fun %26amp; get out the vote!

rathskellar downtown. If on southside (Greenwood) try Oaken Barrel. Downtown should be fun on the weekend. The Pacers have their home opener on friday night. There is a free concert downtown (Blues Traveler. Be sure to wear BLUE the home opener theme is ';Paint the Town Blue'; Shouldn%26#39;t be too crowded Sat except I thought I heard one of the candidates will be in town sometime this weekend. You might check out the Massachusetts Ave. area also, it%26#39;s pretty close to the rathskellar

Since someone is driving. Choose from these 3 in no order The Rathskellor, BroadRipple Brewpub, and The Oaken Barrel. Pick one and you can not go wrong. All three are excellent in my opinion. Saturday early before 6 shouldn%26#39;t be too busy but all will get busy later on. Enjoy!!

Thanks everyone. I am mapping the different suggestions out, and we will decide tomorrow. I think our assigned meeting place is more north, so will probably pick one that is somewhere that way so we aren%26#39;t adding too many miles on the trip home. Whatever your political persuasion, get out there and vote, if you haven%26#39;t already.

Okay, we ended up at the Broad Ripple, as it was closest to our meeting place. What a cute area it seems to be in! They were out of Lawnmower, so two of us had Red something (Redfish, I think), one had Pumpkin and one had the Brown. Enjoyed them a lot, along with mussels, fish and chips, and a barbecue dish. Was great to sit outdoors. So thanks to all for your suggestions, it worked out great.

horrible experience in Brown County Restaurant

Good Morning, I just wanted to share this horrible experience with my fellow Hoosiers (and others), in case you ever vist Brown County (Nashville, In). My daughter, daughter-in-law, and another friend, and I went on a bus tour from here in southern Indiana to Brown County yesterday. We were looking forward to a nice autumn day of shopping and getting away. This was my first time since bariatric surgery (Sept 10) of going away for the day, and I packed a few things that I knew I could eat for fear of not finding anything else. Ultimately, we split up and my daughter and I were on our own to find food soon after arriving.

We studied the menus posted outside most eateries, and chose a place that specilized in coffees, because they had breakfasts, so I could just get some eggs. We had to stand in line to order, and when I asked for eggs, the man said in a very loud voice, ';what%26#39;s the matter with you, we don%26#39;t do eggs this late!'; (it was not quite 11 AM). I quickly chose a serving of cottage cheese and my daughter got a grilled cheese. We retreated to a small quiet booth in the back to eat. I had packed a small bag of whey puffs that I purchased online so I got them out to eat with the cottage cheese. We had barely started to eat, when a gangly teenager came out to our table and told me to stop eating the puffs because I did not buy them there! I nicely explained that I had a very limited menu, had post surgical food needs, etc. So he goes to get what I suppose was his mother. A middle aged skinny blonde woman appears and gets down and literally screams in my face to put them away.

She says that the Health Dept would ';shut her down'; if I continue to eat them, etc. I have been in the restaurant business for 20 years and I know that this is just a lame excuse to keep people from taking up table space to eat other foods on a busy Saturday. I point this out to her, because I am quite annoyed by now. So, she actually threw us out!!!

I know that in a busy tourist location, she doesn%26#39;t have to worry about keeping customers happy, but I don%26#39;t see how anyone could be so horrible to people!

Well, anyway, if anybody visits this little town, I suggest that you steer clear of this place. (The Daily Grind Coffee Shop)

    Extended Stay Hotel

Does anyone know of extended stay hotels in South Bend? Preferable clean, not too expensive? Thanks.

    Extended Stay Hotel

There are several extended stay hotels in Mishawaka, IN along Grape Road which is close to South Bend. I would look for those if you will have a car and don%26#39;t need to be right in downtown South Bend. Mishawaka is about 15 minutes from the downtown area.

  • Meeting place near conseco fieldhouse

Going to a concert at the field house. meeting up with some friends. whats a good place to meet and have a drink before the show, close to the fieldhouse? thanks

    Meeting place near conseco fieldhouse

Anywhere downtown will be busier than normal due to the concert event and people attending. So get there as early as possible for best results for service and tables if dining. Check out indy.org for some information. Lots of bars and restaurants to choose from. Slippery Noodle is off South street and south Meridian street. Jillian%26#39;s is another close location.

    Meeting place near conseco fieldhouse

It seems like there%26#39;s cheaper parking on the roof of the Conseco Parking garage, but if you get downtown early you can snag a place on the street like we did last weekend. There%26#39;s lots of places to the west, so do a search as suggested.

If you%26#39;re coming for a concert, expect downtown to be pretty busy. Here%26#39;s what I%26#39;d suggest: J. Gumbo%26#39;s. It%26#39;s on Maryland St. next to the Hampton Inn, about one block from Conseco. 40 beers on tap and cheap $6 cajun/creole food. It somehow flies under the radar and won%26#39;t be all that crowded.

The closest bar to Conseco is The Pub, at Georgia and Pennsylvannia. But as the closest bar it%26#39;s usually overloaded before a concert.

    You seeing AC/DC?

J.Gumbos is a great choice which has plenty of seating and the best beer selection in town.

North of the Fieldhouse on Pennsylvania Street are Androus O%26#39;Reilly%26#39;s (sp?) which is an Irish place and Coaches Tavern. Both have food and drink. If you are going with an expense account, look at Mo%26#39;s on the corner of Penn and Maryland.

    thursday night birthday dinner

we are coming to lafayette this thursday night which happens to be my birthday with wife and 17 yr old son. he is doing a visit to purdue of friday morning. we are looking for a fun place to go thursday night. we like micro brews, pubs, steaks and maybe some place that would have some entertainment. also any suggested hotels would be good. thanks!!

    thursday night birthday dinner

Here are some good choices for the type of food and drink you are looking for:

Lafayette Brewing Company...it%26#39;s downtown on main between 6th and 7th I think. They have great award winning ales (it is a brew pub) and a generally above average food.

Hunter%26#39;s Pub (downunder)... This is at, uhm, lets say 3rd and Ferry. It is a basement bar, similar to Cheers from the TV show. They have a decent selection of micro%26#39;s, probably 40 micros to choose from. Atmosphere is good and food is very good too.

You%26#39;ll find traditional american food and steaks at both places. I%26#39;ve seen thinks like swordfish on the chefs menu at both places at sometime in the past too. Either place is reasonably priced too.

I%26#39;m not seeing anything on the local papers website as far as live entertainment that night (except karoake at a few places). That doesn%26#39;t mean that there is nothing going on though.

After having food and a drink or 2 at one of the above places, if you want to venture to some other places there will likely be something going on or at least good ';people watching'; and conversation at:

knickerbocker saloon - 1/2 block north of main on 5th. This is the oldest bar in the state, has a great atmosphere and a good selection of micro%26#39;s (maybe 50 bottles).

Black Sparrow- This is on Main around 3rd street (by river, bus station, etc). It is a newer bar, but has a nice older atmosphere due to them keeping all of the old buildings original ceiling and other bits. They have a lot of micro bottles, but I%26#39;ve never made it past their rotating taps. They usually have around 8 beers on tap that you won%26#39;t find elsewhere. More esoteric brews from around the US and the world.

Around the corner from the black sparrow is ';Chumleys';. What this place lacks in atmosphere (due to the more %26#39;frat%26#39; type crowd) it makes up for in a dazzling display of beer prowess. They have 50 taps and 100 bottled beers. I don%26#39;t make it their often due to the crowds and the fact that I can get a very good selection of craft ales at a number of other places around the downtown area.

Lafayette is a great place for a micro brew lover. There are other bars downtown that are good too, but these are the ones that I know well.

If your 17 year old will be with you, the lafayette brewing company is the only one in the list that isn%26#39;t a 21+ establishment. Chumleys may also allow under 21, but may be 21+ after 9 or 10pm. I am unsure.

Anyone stayed at Varsity Club of America?

Looking for some information on this hotel, rooms, location to ND, etc. Any help greatly appreciated.

Anyone stayed at Varsity Club of America?

Varsity Club is near the main shopping area of Mishawaka, not far from ND. I have never stayed there but it gets pretty good reviews from ND fans.

  • Hamilton Town Center

We just returned from a fun night at Hamilton Town Center to celebrate the kick-off to their holiday season. Children%26#39;s Choir, Santa, %26amp; a great fireworks display made the evening wonderful. They%26#39;re supposed to have music, ice sculptures %26amp; other fun things on Saturday the 8th. Check it out!

    INDY Hotel with a view

Interested in a suite type room if possible--i%26#39;m partial to waterfront (which ones have water views?)--with scenic walking nearby, or a walking/bike path? Heard about new Clay Terrace shopping too, will probably check that out. Wondering if there%26#39;s nice hotel with lovely setting/view on northside? Saw Marriott North online and is on somewhat of a waterfront. I have reservations at Embassy suites currently in a business type location area, looks tropical and is recently refurbished it says. That might be just fine, the downtown Embassy was completely booked.Residence Inn on the canal booked too--I actually thought that one might be perfect. Conrad is booked over my dates too. Just wondered if I was missing a ';perfect fit'; to try.

    INDY Hotel with a view

The embassy suites on the northside is in a business location. The Marriott north would be closer to shopping and many choices for restaurants and more to do. The water you speak of would be the White River very dirty and not much in my opinion. Downtown is the place to stay if you don%26#39;t have a car. Everywhere else you will need a car to get around.

    INDY Hotel with a view

Sadly, Indy is lacking on the waterfront hotels...because we have little water to speak of. The Marriott North is on a man-made lake. I believe you could walk around the water there. But if you want to walk to shops/restaurants, you%26#39;ll be taking your life in your hands. You definitely need a car on the north side.

If you are willing to gamble, you could book somewhere else and wait until last minute for the downtown hotels. The Embassy Suites and Residence Inn dowtonw may have vacancies at the last minute. Typically there are conventions in town, and I%26#39;m certain you could find a last minute cancellation. There%26#39;s lots of places to walk to - we enjoy walking and biking along the canal.

If you are not willing to gamble, I%26#39;d choose the Marriott North over the Embassy Suites North just because you want to walk. Embassy Suites North is in a business area with a Costco and a couple restaurants next door. There%26#39;s definitely no where to walk to from there.

    THanks SO MUCH for your help with my decisions! (o;

Yeah, I thought about chancing booking the first available night downtown, and hoping for a cancellation the second night, but they did tell me at the property it would be risky to do so. No guarantees.no fun to repack and try to find something else the next night, would rather not have to ';resettle'; for the 2nd night.

So I wondered about the new Renaissance in Carmel or the Residence inn in Carmel, and just be by Clay Terrace for some of the fun, (sidewalks for my early morning exercise walk around there? So many pretty trees now, would be nice to simply be able to admire local colors) then drive downtown for part of the day to ';play';. MOron Trail sounds pretty, and maybe my morning walk on that trail? IS there a property within walking distance to that morning stroll? I imagine I%26#39;ll need to drive to it as well.

    .

It appears we will need to drive to our recreation/shopping areas. That%26#39;ll be ok. We are driving in from 2 hrs away, just thought it would be nice to simply walk around from our hotel, but we sure can hop in the car to head up to Carmel for Clay Terrace, or to downtown to walk the canal, shops and restaurants. I like going for exercise walk in the mornings, so maybe that%26#39;ll just have to be around the business areas, ponds,or whatever is close by unless it%26#39;s a heavily traveled road.

Thanks for the help and feedback!

Try to get a downtown hotel for the convenience of walking to places. The Renasance is not close to any walking paths or shopping. It is in a business type area of offices. There are lots of hotels downtown to choose from. Check out indy.org for some more ideas and information. It is the cities convention and tourist website.

Thanks so much, I%26#39;ll check out the site!

took the last room at Crowne Plaza Union Station, rest of properties I checked were either sold out or well over 200$ per nt. Any suggestions about the Crowne?

Did you check the Columbia Club on Monument Circle? They have recently reworked rooms facing Monument Circle (the center of the city - overlooking the Soldiers %26amp; Sailors Monument - with it%26#39;s large water-fall type fountains on either side). There is a great Old World type lounge and bar inside the main floor entrance - a great place to relax and talk or have a drink before you head up to your room, or out for a night on the town.

It%26#39;s very centrally located (clearly) - and there is great people watching on The Circle.

I just looked up info on that one, It does look really nice!Has great location and great reviews. However, is sold out on the dates I need. I will probably try again a time or two, never know!Someone might cancel. Thanks for the tip.

Although I wonder if the reason not showing availability, the reviews about CC say you must be a member of the club or be sponsored in by someone who is a member. It%26#39;s a private club they said.

After checking out restaurant reviews I saw that Santori%26#39;s was very highly rated. I have never been there before. As the previous poster stated it is in Fountain Square which is just south of downtown. And it gets very good reviews.

Great. My husband has had the lamb chops at Bravo and thought they were good. Now, I have some new places. Thanks for the ideas. Marlyne

Try Athens on 86th at NE corner of 86th and Township Line Road.

    ski rental for Paoli Peaks

We are bringing a group of Scouts to Paoli Peaks for a President%26#39;s Day weekend ski/snowboard trip. Can anyone tell me if there are other places to rent equipment near Paoli (not on site)? We are actually staying in Mitchell, IN (coming in from Nashville) so any options near there or on the way would be appreciated.

Any other suggestions for things to do in the area if the weather turns sour would also be appreciated. Thanks!

    ski rental for Paoli Peaks

With Indiana not being a big ski mecca, I would probably doubt if you would be able to find any other rental place than at Paoli Peaks. Mitchell has one of my favorite state parks, Spring Mill State Park, there. There is a pioneer village with a working grist mill(not sure if it would be running in winter) and a small Gus Grissom (Mercury astronaut from Mitchell) museum in the park. There are caves to explore and other activities I%26#39;m sure Scouts would love.

Thanks, Saltydog! We will definitely check into the State Park.

    Airport Parking

Has anyone used one of the off-site lots recently? Are any of them better than the others? I%26#39;m talking about the lots along High School Road north of the airport.

    Airport Parking

For business trips I always park at Indy-Park-Ride and Fly (parkrideflyusa.com/ind-indianapolis-airport-鈥?/a>) I have found that they are very quick at getting you to the airport and then back to your car. Also during the winter they have your car all heated up waiting for you when you get back to their location.

    Airport Parking

I second the Indy-Park-Ride recommendation. I used to use the Tiger lot, but the shuttle service there is not very good (they cut back on the number of shuttles a little over a year ago, and you can wait a long time for one).

Not sure what will happen with the new terminal opening - am assuming there will be new privately owned long-term lots nearer the roads leading to the new building.

Any info on parking for the new airport would be welcomed.

Lunch on game day near Lucas?

Coming to our first game at the Oil Can Sunday. Too cold for us to tailgate. Will be around by about 10:15AM. I am familiar with most places that were convenient to the Dome (Acatraz, The Ram, Jillian%26#39;s, etc), but now those places are a lot longer walk to the game. Anything on the South or West sides of the stadium that would be closer?

Lunch on game day near Lucas?

Those places you mentioned are still close to the stadium. Lucas Oil is only a block south of the Dome, on the other side of the railroad tracks.

Lunch on game day near Lucas?

for some reason I though it was 3 or 4 blocks farther south. TKS

  • Brand new Renaissance Carmel or Crowne Plaza Downtown INDY?

I%26#39;m still a bit stuck. Since it%26#39;s been recommended , I am leaning toward staying downtown , walking the Canal, Circle Mall etc, then driving up to CArmel for their artistic district/Clay Terrace. Perhaps some walking along Monon Trail too. I%26#39;m a nature lover, outdoor fitness enthusiast, so have been enjoying all the gorgeous colors of fall. My friend is interier designer and likes to shop/good restaurants. we%26#39;re 2 ladies mid 40%26#39;s simply wanting to hang out, time to relax, maybe a spa service, and perhaps nice Martini bar/wine bar; nicer dining (we%26#39;re visiting on mon and tues nts, so probably not live music weekdays? We are both married, so not that much into night life, but read something about place called ';Slippery noodle';?.

The Brand New Renaissance in Carmel looks upscale and all new--so nice, and I got such a great price on it, it%26#39;s hard for me to decide. Add%26#39;l ideas/suggestions? Which HOtel/setting would we prefer? The rest of downtown hotels on our dates were well over 200$ nt. or sold out.

Brand new Renaissance Carmel or Crowne Plaza Downtown INDY?

Definately stay at the Crowne Plaza downtown Indy. Lots of restaurants close by and shopping. Clay Teraace is nice by only keep you busy shopping for 1-3 hours if that. Much more to do downtown and easy to walk to any destination. I also suggest the Slippery Noodle for great live blues music and food. Get there before 7 and no cover charge. Sit in the back room for the live music. Great service and drinks. Plenty of upscale martini bars at the fancy restaurants downtown to choose from.

Brand new Renaissance Carmel or Crowne Plaza Downtown INDY?

Perfect, it%26#39;s decided then! THanks Tuesdaynightpool! You%26#39;ve been quite helpful, and i think we%26#39;ll have an awesome time! I guess i was pretty fortunate that the Crowne Plaza hotel had one room left for our dates. I was concerned at first about the quality of the property, since its one star level lower than the other, but the reviews of the property are decent, i%26#39;ll just have to request a quiet room to avoid the train noise.

    thanks again!

    whoops, that is, thanks so much-- tuesdayPOOLnight! (o;

Glad to be of help. There are some spa%26#39;s downtown. I%26#39;m not much help in that area. (being a guy). Check out indy.org for more information re spa%26#39;s. A few good bars restaurants close to the Crowne Plaza are Ike %26amp; Jonesy%26#39;s, Claudaugh Pub, Spaghetti Factory, Ram Brewery. Only one I have been to is Old Spaghetti Factory our family loves it.

Thanks a bunch. I%26#39;ve been to a Spaghetti Factory before, and they are very good. I like the live music idea at Slippery Noodle, so that will probably have my vote, unless they don%26#39;t do live music on early weekdays. I spoke with the hotel, and they sure had lots of suggestions too, and i%26#39;ll have to check out that website too you mentioned. I think I%26#39;ve seen that in other reviews too, time for me to visit it!

    Thanks again,

I work in one of the Duke building right accross from the Renaissance. Although this might be a very nice property, I would firmly suggest staying downtown. If you stay downtown anything you need will be in walking sitnce from, nightclubs to restaurants, shopping, muyseums etc. If you stay in carmel, you will have to drive everywhere.

THANKS SO MUCH to all of you that have posted suggestions! I just got back this afternoon from our INDY fun, and You were ALL right! Staying downtown was the best choice! We DID love being able to walk all over the place. Such great history and beautiful architecture . Monument circle very cool! I walked into Columbia Club hotel. Great location and another beautiful building...so if I get on it sooner, maybe that could be our next spot, with a room facing the circle. Although our time was VERY brief, we walked all over downtown, the sidewalk along the River in WHite River STate Park, past the museums, over the bridge (in the rain with umbrellas) --but that was fine, bundled up, stayed dry and enjoyed the scenery of the trees, and limestone blocks/rocks along this scenic path. We crossed a bridge again, and walked next to IUPUI then all the way back downtown. Great exercise walk, then we drove up to Carmel to shop at Clay Terrace. We liked having the HIstoric Union Station, Crowne Plaza as our ';home base';. the hotel valets very willing to drive us anywhere we needed, and get picked up, but since we both LOVED to walk, only used that service once.Great to have it available though!

Enjoyed Circle Center Mall, walked all way down Mass Ave, and enjoyed spa services at ';Complexions';, Leigh Ann and Debra did GREAT job! since Studio ____ ? (cant remember the name --by MOnument Circle) was filled up for the day. We enjoyed getting Swedish massages and feet rubbed (since they were so sore from all the walking!) But we loved it!Great little art district there.

I mostly enjoyed the general feel (ambiance) of the city, architecture, little cafe%26#39;s , eateries, chocolate and ice cream shops, the people, SO MANY restaurant choices, fountains, monuments (I was impressed at the many spaces showing pride in those who have served)

Ate at PF Changs%26#39; and Champs...(spent too much $$ shopping and at the spa--decided to spend less on food) we willHAVE to go back sometime again, and check out more restaurants and visit more sites! We decided to go again next fall, a bit earlier to enjoy full color of the trees!

Meridian Avenue drive up to Carmel, was very pretty drive....great homes along that street!

Thanks again all, for your suggestions ,it was a great trip!

I%26#39;m very glad you had a great time and enjoyed our city! I didn%26#39;t think about it before, but next time you might try the local B%26amp;Bs and small Inns on the Old North Side. (The Villa Inn and Spa, Looking Glass Inn, Nestle Inn.) They are within walking distance of Mass Ave. A littl further hike to the city center, but still a nice walk.

The Villa Inn has a nice little spa and restaurant I highly recommend whether you stay there or not.

I also suggest checking out the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA). If you come next year in September, the Saturday after Labor Day they have a wonderful art festival called ';Penrod';. The website has more info.

    http://www.imamuseum.org/

THanks Tina! My friend and I have already decided we must go again next fall.....I will be sure and check out those options. I love little places with their own personality. Since my friend is interior designer, she%26#39;d enjoy the Art Museum as much as I would. I%26#39;d be torn between the art show, and going a bit later to enjoy the fall colors since sept is bit early for leaf color...but sure would be lovely weather in Sept. for long walks!

    thanks again for tips!

  • Indiana for foreign tourist

We are hosting a young professional woman from South America who has never been in the USA before and is coming here for a big family party in Chicago suburbs. She will spend time in the northern suburbs for the party weekend and Thanksgiving, will stay in downtown Chicago for 4-5 days, and we thought we would also like to take her to see some sights OUTSIDE of the Chicago area as well. We have a car and would like to show her what Wisconsin and/ or Indiana have to offer. Ideas PLEASE

I really need ideas and information PLEASE:

*A big designer discount shopping mall- names please????

*U Wisconsin in Madison- university and college town

*MIlwaukee- perhaps art museum- anything else?

    *Something in Indiana????

My public library has lots of Chicago guide books but not one for Wisconsin or Indiana!!!

    Indiana for foreign tourist

Lighthouse Place in Michigan City is a good outlet mall, it%26#39;s outside though. The weather is getting colder now and is usually unpredictable at this time of year. I can%26#39;t give good rec%26#39;s for anything else in IN unless you give me an idea of what you%26#39;re looking for.

    Indiana for foreign tourist

We only have two days so we have decided to take our visitor to Wisconsin and Chicagoland attractions this time and will ask again about Indiana another time. thanks

is the Courtyard next to Victory Field still a huge construction project? Is there still a Friday%26#39;s there?

Yes, the site is still a huge construction project.

    And Friday%26#39;s is still closed...

    Bachlorette Party

Searching for a ';very nice'; place to stay - large suite within close proximity to nightlife - clubs, dancing, etc. Will be going 2/7/09. Possible comedy club, then dance club. Coming from Kentucky, know nothing about Indianapolis, have only passed through when traveling. Due to time of year and weather, am wanting ';nightlife'; within walking distance of hotel if possible. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Bachlorette Party

Multitude of hotels in the downtown area to choose from. Check out indy.org for some more information. It is the Indianapolis convention %26amp; tourists website. There is a comedy club called cracers downtown also. Lots of Bachlorette parties on the weekend. I was in a bar that had three going on at the same time over the summer. Enjoy.

    Bachlorette Party

There are many bars/clubs in the downtown Indianapolis area that are within walking distance. That%26#39;s the benefit of Indy vs your other options. There are also some nice restaurants that can handle a larger crowd downtown. I definitely agree there are multitudes of bachelorette parties going on downtown. It%26#39;ll be chilly in February, though, so be prepared! You shouldn%26#39;t have problems finding a hotel to stay. Embassy Suites is in the middle of downtown. Probably the best option for a larger group and connected to the Circle Center mall.

Students Needing Ride to Airport over Christmas

I am trying something new--not sure how helpful it will be but I am offering students rides to the airport depending on their flight time as I work at BSU but live in Pendleton. I can work something out on a case-by-case basis %26amp; I am thinking about $45 to $50 for one person.

    Closest hotel to new airport

    hi all!

we leave from nap in a few weeks for cancun! yay! what is the closest hotel to the new airport? i cannot remember.

    Closest hotel to new airport

From what we saw on the community days tour, the only nearby hotels are close to the old terminal. I would imagine they run shuttles to the new midfield terminal.

Or there are places to stay at exit 66 west of the terminal, but they may not have shuttle service. You might search for ';park %26amp; fly'; options as well.

    Closest hotel to new airport

Since it looks like you are coming from tere haute you might try the I 70 and Plainfield exit (SR 267?). There are several new hotels there and it%26#39;s only about a five minute drive to the new term. There are also plenty of places to eat there. Just about any fast food you can think of and a couple of nice sit down places (The Coachman has good prime rib) In case you need some last minute shopping there is The Metropolis Mall nearby also. There is also a winery at that exit. I think you can google ';hotels in plainfield, IN'; and find them. They are probably less expensive than the ones by the old terminal. Have fun in MX, hope to get there in mid Dec

thank you so much! i feel ashamed, that is where i was born and raised. moved to terre haute and don%26#39;t remember anything! i am only 29, i just have a bad memory, lol. thank you again.

Have a great time on your upcoming trip! I work for Dora Brothers Hospitality and we operate two hotels in Plainfield located 5 - 10 minutes from the new terminal. The hotels are the Staybridge Suites and Holiday Inn Express (both located on Cambridge Drive). The hotels offer complimentary airport shuttle plus park n fly rates. Phone numbers for both: Holiday Inn Express (317) 839-9000 or Staybridge Suites (317) 839-2700.

Both the hotels mentioned above ar really new and look nice. The shuttle to the airport sounds like a can%26#39;t miss deal.

Hi there. I am the Director of Sales for the Staybridge Suites and Holiday Inn Express at the Airport Hotel Center. (We are located adjacent to Chateau Thomas Winery)

We just updated our shuttle schedule to start at 5:00am and continue until 1am. I thought this might come in handy as you plan your trip.

  • Hotels near Conseco Field House

I will be attending a concert at conseco field house. I am traveling alone and am nervous about walking at night after the concert. I want to stay in a hotel that is in a safe area. I also want to be near shopping during the day. What hotel would fit being close to Conseco and close to shopping

    Hotels near Conseco Field House

Pretty much all the hotels in downtown Indianapolis are walkable and downtown Indy is safe. The Hampton Inn is about a 2-3 block walk to Conseco, it%26#39;s at Meridian and Maryland Streets. As far as shopping there is The Circle Centre Mall in downtown. It is an enclosed 3 level mall with just about any thing you could want. There are also plenty of restaurants and bars all located with easy walking distances of that area. What concert are you going to? If it%26#39;s during the holiday season be sue to take a walk up and around The Soldiers and Sailors Monument (aka The Circle) It will fully decorated. Any particular type of restauarant you would be interested in?
